Chantix/Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking? I need reasons NOT to take it please
So I'm at the end of my rope as far as smoking. I'm a fool and whatever else you want to say, but the fact is that I quit for six months with the help of nicotine patches and some other no-smoking things and lollipops.

When my insurance refused to pay for the patches any longer, (which was unknown to me till it happened), I was ok for about two weeks and then I started smoking again.

Now I really want to quit again. I was never able to quit before and even though I did get some more patches, it did not work this time.

I am seeing my doctor next week and she is willing to write me a script for Chantix or Wellbutrin. I have never taken an anti-depressant in my life and I worry about the black-box warnings, AND any kind of permanent damage or change. I'm terrified of messing with my serotonin for some reason, but mostly any permanent damage. I am a woman, and from what I have read, men can be permanently damaged by anti-depressants, (erectile dysfunction permanent), but I wonder if it can do that to a man, it must be dangerous?

So at this point-I am ready to try it, but I really would like to know what kind of permanent risks am I taking?

I'm not aware of any long term side effects, but some of the short term ones are really horrendous. Chantix tends to make people really angry, fighting with strangers angry, in addition to bringing on bizarre and upsetting dreams.

Here is a link where they discuss it. I could not find the original discussion where I saw this, but it is something that apparently happens to men AFTER they stop taking the prozac or drugs?

I know that wellbutrin is supposed to not have "sexual" side-effects, but the fact that an anti-depressant that affects serotonin has ANY permanent side-effects worries me!

Yeah-I had horrible nightmares and hot-flashes on the patch till I took it off at night. The black-box warnings are enough to make me want to be committed somewhere BEFORE taking it ha ha, but my doctor says that she is pretty sure that I will not become homicidal, or suicidal, but if I do that I would have enough awareness to get help before something terrible happened.
My doc said that those side-effects tend to happen to younger people who have not experienced enough life to know that things will get better.

THIS! Plus the reason why you don't smoke while taking it is because it makes you very ditsy. hard to remember your own name let alone think of smoking or anything else. Very angry..and very bad dreams. don't take it OP. You can do it cold turkey. hf

Don't know about Welbutrin, but I did the Chantix for 3 months. I quit smoking, but I felt like I was in a fog all the time. Like I got a little dumber. I decided it wasn't worth it, started smoking again. I recently discovered the ecig, and it's been the best thing I've tried.

Someone that I know said that the nightmares were so horrific that it was enough to scare them into not taking the drug OR smoking anymore.
I worry that it could make me turn bipolar or some other serious mental illness.

Dr. Richard Schulze suggests taking one capsule of lobelia in place of one cigarette the first day, 2 in place of two cigarettes the second day and keep increasing until the desire goes away.

It also clears out the tar and/or nicotine.

He says if it makes you throw up, that's okay, it good for you.

Re: Chantix/Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking? I need reasons NOT to take it please
Here is one reply from the link I posted above: this is the kind of thing that scares me too:
Some people may disagree, but I have no doubt that this prolonged sexual dysfunction is from the use of SSRI's. I have experienced these symptoms that started on the drug, and they continue despite being off all medication for years.

I also feel numb, disconnected from life, I can't emotionally connect to people in the way I use to. I don't feel like a human being anymore. I feel ,empty, boring - permanently and thoroughly dead inside. These drugs have purged me of all my humanity. I fear that I will never be the same again.

I'm sure that some people may say that that person was already depressed, or that maybe they still have depression, but I appreciate that they could be correct about the drugs having something to do with it. Especially if it is not the kind of depression or symptoms that they had before taking the drugs.

Just quit. You are strong enough to do it without drugs, just tell yourself you are an ex-smoker until you believe it.

Please don't take that crap.

Try food grade hydrogen peroxide diluted in water. It will cleanse your system and reduce your cravings. Please at least consider it. It cured my IBS in a few days when the medical industry says there is no cure for IBS.

So horribly bad and seemed so painfully real. I wish I could forget them. Please don't take it. hf

Never tried either of those myself, but for what it's worth, I've known a few people, including my girlfriend, who have tried Chantix. They all did actually quit smoking- but basically only for as long as they took the Chantix. They were all smoking again within a couple months. And a couple of them did mention how the Chantix made them feel angry all the time.

Go to the cancer ward at your local hospital, visit with people who have had half their throats/faces cut off, then go on Chantix. Worked for my husband.

I tried to quit many many times, once made it two years, and went back. its crazy i know. youre fighting yourself, your own mind turned against you. thats why cold turkey is the only way to go, its about a COMMITMENT> when i did finally quit, i dreamt of buying a pack, or bumming a smoke EVERY NIGHT for TWO YEARS EVERY NIGHT. Its the hardest thing i ever did. but drugs and patches are just more substitutes. got to know that its not part of you anymore

Some day, so beautiful a flower,

Remembering smoke and flowerless slum,

While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs.

I tried wellbutrin to quit smoking. What a nightmare It said take one in morning and one at night caution may make you sleepy. I was up for at least three days, went nuts and moved to the garage for a week until It wore off and I was sane again and fine to be around the kids. I only took two pills.

This book is just simply amazing. It breaks down why we are addicted to smoking. Why all the other methods dont work. and of course how to free yourself from smoking.

check it out.. please!

Wellbutrin is not an SSRI. It affects dopamine.
