Contrails do not persist. They rapidly dissipate. Chemtrails persist, sometimes, all day, turning clear blue skies into a hazy, milky mess. Contrails don't do that. It's the observation of this that has resulted in the interest about WTF is going on. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21651258 Wrong. Just wrong. Contrails are essentially cirrus clouds. By claiming they can't persist you are claiming that cirrus clouds can't exist. Hilarious! Contrails have been known to be able to persist since planes could fly high enough to make them. Now, considering there is a lot more air traffic, that the traffic flies higher (colder temperatures more often conducive to persistent contrail formation) and that newer airplane engines burn cleaner (more water in the exhaust) and have higher thrust (more exhaust so again more water) is it really unexpected that persistent contrails are more common? newspaper articles describing spreading persistent contrails from the 40's 50's and 70's here [ link to contrailscience.com]
