Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26006802 From my understanding, projects involving arificial wombs (and cloning)for various purposes have been going on since at least 1930. Cloning, yes, but the artificial womb is what I find so strange. Live and let live, for we all have our own lessons to learn. |
| Angel Helper (OP) User ID: 27117434 12/01/2012 10:51 AM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to en.wikipedia.org] artificial uterus (or womb) is a theoretical device that would allow for extracorporeal pregnancy or extrauterine fetal incubation (EUFI)[1] by growing an embryo or fetus outside of the body of a female organism that would normally internally carry the embryo or fetus to term. An artificial uterus, as a replacement organ, would have many applications. It could be used to assist women with damaged or diseased uteri to bring the fetus to term.[1] This can potentially be performed as a switch from a natural uterus to an artificial uterus, thereby moving the threshold of fetal viability to a much earlier stage of pregnancy.[1] In this sense, it can be regarded as a neonatal incubator with very extended functions. Also, it can potentially be used for initiation of fetal development.[1] Furthermore, it could avail for performing, for example, fetal surgery procedures at an early stage instead of having to postpone them until term of pregnancy.[1] Live and let live, for we all have our own lessons to learn. |

Although, think of the applications for good: premature babies, high risk pregnancies, women who are unable to conceive, etc. So, there's potential for good in the development of artificial wombs. Interesting subject for sure. The 80's had lots of fun movies and series in the sci-fi genre. Otherworld is a fun series you might wanna check out.
