Days late in replying, but I believe the poster was commenting on (his assumption that) most teenagers will not have the maturity and life experience to fully take your advice in the manner that you intended it.

But so I got to know you quite well in the recent Google/Skynet thread, and I admire you and your background.

I am old enough to say that I played Eliza on an MSAI 8080 computer running CP/M.

I comment here because my reply would be buried in the other thread. In the book 2061 Odyssey Three, David Bowman and HAL merge into some type of non-physical entity.

In this world (the one that we sense with our bodily senses), any singularity man-machine bio-computer creation would still be only compromised of bio-parts, computer parts, and the electrical impulses (dare I say synapses) that run through such a device.

But the non-physical component is not really considered in this creation.

I rather like the title of the book that the movie Blade Runner was based on : "Do Androids dream of Electronic Sheep?" . . . so the creation that you speak of needs to be able to escape the bounds of the "body" that it inhabits. We need to truly discuss the "Soul" of your machine.

It was no trouble to find this thread - I've been a GLP user (more of a lurker than a poster) for about 7 - 8 years now. I know my way around.

I was engrossed in the conversation you had with the AC from Argentina. GLP can be like walking into the Cantina Bar in Star Wars IV. But so its nice when you can have a deep, intelligent conversation with someone 1/2 way around the world.

To point. My career is in computers. (programming, repair, database development, etc) But I was helping my son rake a yard today, and continued to ponder your thread in general.

Food for thought.

1) Assume that we are souls that inhabit a biological body. When we meditate (or at least attempt to turn off our external bodily senses thru sleeping or napping), we can tune into our internal soul's capabilities. In my estimation, these abilities include dreaming, visualizing other places and the ability to leave our body. In developing your (what I will call) Bio-Digital body, we will need to ascend to the science necessary for a soul to inhabit and subsequently animate this body. Imagine having a lifeless Bio-Digital body waiting in your lab. You then go into a meditative state, astral travel out of your human body, then proceed to gravitate INTO your bio-digital body and come alive INSIDE it. Be able to see as this body sees, sense as this body senses.

2) Take this above concept to long term SPACE TRAVEL. Whatever current space agency would not have to worry about putting humans in suspended animation. Rather, they simply launch a vehicle with bio-digital bodies in the storage area (as they would not have to be fed? - hopefully). so anyway, when the space vehicle arrives at whatever distant planet, then have the same number of humans go into an Astral state. We could call then Astralnauts. Ha. (I hereby claim copyright on that name.) So souls here on earth literally soul travel to the bio-digital bodies on the space ship, and animate the bodies remotely, and go exploring. The advantage of this: if there is some kind of accident, and the bio-digital bodies are, Uh, killed? or otherwise damaged beyond repair, then the astralnauts simply re-inhabit their earthly bodies.

So forget about the Turing test. forget about measuring the 'intelligence' of our creation. Think of the fact that we will want to create bodies that are compatible with the environment that it will need to operate in. Say for instance that we create a bio-digital body that is humanoid in form, but impervious to fire or radioactive waste. Using the idea in point 2 above, you could have trained astralnauts become firefighters or rescuers in a nuclear disaster. or we could develop bodies that can live in (say) methane atmospheres and "physically" explore a planet of that type. Gone are the need to ship large containers of oxygen to keep a human astronaut alive.

Remember Ron Howard's Cocoon? The theme where the aliens inhabited human 'skins' so they could interact with us is where I see this going.

Yes, you are describing Dicks's "replicants", effectively, with a bit of Heinlein's "Time enough for the Stars" psychic communication for the purpose of communicating with spacecraft, with just a dash of Ed Dames' purported remote viewing capability, with Matrix icing.

Btw, I subscribe, currently, to the metaphysical model that includes a version of morphogenic fields. I don't think we're meat with a soul spark. I think we're sparks with meat smoke. Too many possible directions of conversation here. It's late, and I want to drink more.

In addition:

I read the first 3 books of Issac Asimov's "I Robot" series. What ran across my mind is that I recalled where one of the sub-plots involved a robot named "Giskard" (not clear on the spelling but if you read these books, you'd know)

As was revealed in the story, Giskard could read minds, and so was able to rescue someone in distress before the other robot because of this.

I will say that in the past few years (at least 4 or 5), I have had increased mind-reading with my wife. Ok, we've logged 23 years together, and psychologists will tell me that we've been together long enough that we will have increasing episodes where "coincidental" event happen where it will SEEM LIKE I read her mind, or her, mine. But so I beg to differ. She will be in her room, and I will be doing work in the kitchen, and have (in my idea) an abstract thought about something I feel is unique. And so it will increasingly happen where she will call me into her room, and say, "You know, I was just thinking. . " and more or less proceed to talk to me about the very thoughts I had on my mind. Where I'm going with this, is that this is a human / soul ability that would be beneficial to incorporate into our bio-digital creation. But since in my earlier dissertation, I suggested that it would be OURSELVES that would be inhabiting these units, then it would fall into order that our creation could do that as well.
