School is a tricky thing these days. I congratulate all teachers and administrators for their efforts to educate the youth of America because, it seems to be getting tougher. Social hot button issues don’t make it any easier either. One school in Maine found this out first hand when they were sued by a transgender student’s family. The student, evidently a boy living as a girl, was using the girl’s bathroom at the school. After complaints the school decided to have the student use the faculty bathroom in an effort to appease both sides on the issue. But the transgender students family didn’t like it and sued the school.

A recent article states: “The child’s parents — on her behalf, along with the Maine Human Rights Commission — sued the district in November 2009 in Penobscot County Superior Court over her access to the girls bathroom, the school’s treatment of her and how officials handled bullying by other students. The lawsuit was filed five months after the commission found the school had discriminated against the girl.” The judge in the case found no wrong doing on the part of the school and said the school acted within the law. This is another example of how our schools are becoming less about academics and more about social issues. Click here for original article.



My input:
The key here, is that the school offered accommodation, he was able to use the staff bathroom. Any kind of discrimination case (I've helped with many for the disabled and age) is if the agency provided accommodation.
