If it still runs, probably a faulty O2 sensor. Don't worry about it unless you hear a noise or something.

I ran my 4 runner for about a year with the check engine light on and it did no harm.

Tell ya how i fixed mine...1/2 inch square of electrical tape...apply directly over the indication light....problem solved:-):peace:

In some cases you can damage the engine by ignoring the check engine light..

Check the code it is throwing.. might be a cheap fix.

Could be as simple as a gas cap no longer sealing, as the poster said.

Your car only needs to run for another 3 weeks cause everything is over on Dec. 21. Expect more electrical issues in the coming days due to stronger magnetic fields from Planet X as it gets closer.

As posters say...OR...Low oil equals bad...Low water in radiator equals bad.

Do you check your oil and change every 3000 miles?

If it's running well, do what I mentioned.
My truck has it's light on now for 15 years,
almost 300,000 miles on it. Just do what I mentioned.

it rained first time in a long time last night, then the check engine light n; i wonder if its moisture in the gas cap ill check back later

Go get the codes pulled for free at Auto Zone and post them.

I'm willing to help you.

Don't buy anything based solely on the codes....they may have been caused by something else and you may spend money unnecessarily.

If you were closer you could swing by. LOL.

O'Reilly Auto Parts will let you rent the code checker for free. You simply write out a check for the purchase price of the checker, run the check on your car & then return it, they'll give you your check back.

We've done this many times.

After fixing the problem you may have to disconect the negative lead off of your battery to turn off the light.

Just disconect it for a minute and reconect to see if the problem is gone.

A flashing engine light usually means a missfire and the car needs tuned up.

yup..obd 2 loaner..pull the codes and reset.

can`t a guy just turn the key of on 3 times to retrieve the code via flashing light?
Or is that older cars?

Before doing that I recommend pulling the cables of the battery for a minute to reboot the computer. Sometimes the engine light will not come back.

Its getting to the point where the code readers are so cheap that anyone with a 1996 or newer car should buy one....it will save time, money, and stress. You can also help out neighbors.

That is for cars older than 1996 equipped with OBDI or something similar. 1996 and newer cars don't do that...thank god, I hated counting the flashes.

DO NOT disconnect the battery before you document what the code was. It may be needed later....speaking from lots of experience.

your gas filler cap may not be seated properly, setting an EVAP code. Take the advise of ASE Guy and get the code pulled at Auto Zone and have them clear it from memory after noting it for you.

My Volvo light comes on automatically after a certain number of miles just to remind me that it needs to see a damn mechanic just to turn the stupid thing off.

The ECM has detected that the IAC counts higher/lower than expected.the engine speed is not in its expected range.
Probable cause:
Vacume leak on engine
dirty throttle body
IAC motor defective
Poor electrical connection to the IAC valve

BS if its 96 or newer the "check engine" light won't come on unless there is a problem.

The maintenance or service light on Europeans will come on for the purpose you posted. Maybe you are mixing them up.

The OBD2 system on these cars is only looking for problems, it is not a maintenance reminder.

In my area Advance auto parts or auto zone will check the code for free for you. Get the exact code and Google It. May help...
