Again, Peachtree City is nice. See the video I posted earlier. In PTC, we drive electric golf carts - we don't need a car if you can find a job in town. It is a little more expensive housing-wise than Newnan (just west of here) and both have good shopping and not as much traffic as when you get into Atlanta. It's also only 1/2 hour from the airport, so PTC has a lot of pilots, flight attendants, and other air personnel living in it.

You have to watch the rural areas in Georgia - think Honey Boo Boo. Man, you get around those small towns by Valdosta, Macon, LaGrange and it's like they speak a foreign language.

Athens is a nice enough town -- BUT it is a college town (UGA). Can you live with 35,000 college students?

Pine Mountain is nice - and pretty. It's more rural again but a little more upscale because of Callaway Gardens and all the vacation stuff.

I, personally, would stay away from the northern suburbs of Atlanta unless you don't mind constant traffic. It's horrible. It's a little more happening as far as restaurants and bars than our section of the city. We are more family-oriented.

Atlanta, itself, does have culture (concerts, museums, orchestra) and sports - no problem there. My son (who attends GA Tech) and his girlfriend rent in the Highlands area of Atlanta and that is a really nice place with close-by stores and restaurants you can walk to. I think his rent is about $700 per month or so.

The mountains are nice. You have to be selective, though. Helen (in the mountains) is way too crowded in the fall due to Octoberfest - you don't want to live there but it's a nice and really fun place to visit.

Elijay/Jasper area is OK - big enough for shopping but still small. It is also still close to Atlanta. There are some large but nice neighborhoods which aren't too expensive and gaited w/lakes and such.

The Ga Power Lakes area (Burton, Seed, Rathbun) is very pretty but way expensive. Those lakes are probably the prettiest lakes you will ever see, though. But you probably won't find many rentals there and homes are $1 million on up to purchase.

Blue Ridge/Morganton is a nice area. You have the lake to putz around on and rivers to fly fish, places to hike. The homes aren't too badly priced up there. I personally like Blue Ridge. You can find a nice little place with a view for a couple hundred grand.

Hiawassee is also a very nice place and Lake Chatuge is beautiful. This is one of the prettiest towns in the state. I also like Hiawassee.

I don't really know much about Blairsville (Lake Notteley) but I have some friends w/ a cabin there and they like it. These northern lakes tend to fluctuate in depth a lot due to water usage. The GA Power lakes don't but then they have all those mega millionaires up there making sure they get everything they want.

Savannah/Brunswick is always one of my favorite areas to visit - Tybee Island, Hilton Head, Jekyll Island - there are some very nice places but there are also some really dumpy areas so you have to be selective about where you live.

I hear good things about Thomasville and Columbus but I personally don't care for them much. Many of the native Georgians really like the areas, though. It's all personal preference, I guess. A lot of people hunt down in those areas.

Re: I can no longer afford to live in my town. Relocate? To where? Any doom goin down in Georgia?
We moved here ten years ago from Wichita, KS. My husband's company told him he had to move to either Chicago or here. He had been to the office down here in Peachtree City and figured the kids would like the area. We figured getting them closer to a city would show them a different lifestyle from the farming community we were living in. Our kids loved attending McIntosh High School (Fayette County has some of the best schools in the state) because they could drive their golf cart to school. Peachtree City is great - Fayetteville not so much.

Everyone here has moved in from somewhere else because it is a planned community from 1960 or so. People are pretty much upper middle class here. The only problem I've had is people at work (I work 30 miles from where I live) give me a hard time about living in the rich people's town.

Anyway, the move was good for the kids as they chose engineering careers, both attending GA Tech. One thing to know is that the state of Georgia pays college tuition for in-state kids who have a grade point average of 3.0 or better. GA Tech and UGA are both rather difficult to get in but are both great schools. My son is a senior Mechanical Engineering student and already has job offers. My daughter is working on her PhD and won't be finished for 2 1/2 more years.

We have little crime in Peachtree City and the cops tend to go hard after anyone who is breaking the law. Sometimes the kids think they are being harassed, though, so it's best to keep your nose clean. Even Jimmy Carter's grandson got into trouble with the law here - but then again, he entered a home and stole a video game console.

With the 90 miles of paths for carts (bikes, joggers), there are always people outside. Here are a couple more videos of my town, Peachtree City. It is also very beautiful. Except for North Georgia Mountains, I wouldn't live anywhere else in the state but Peachtree City.

There is a lot of crime in Georgia in general (in my opinion), so we appreciate the safety here. We don't have to feel insecure about walking the dog at night or leaving our doors unlocked when we are home. It's a good family town but it is what most people consider a "bubble" community. The kids are pampered and sheltered and don't necessarily know the real world.

If you are after a little more action, you probably would like the Buckhead/Alpharetta area which is north Atlanta but then again you get the traffic and it's a little more costly.

My son's girlfriend used to live down the street and when their kids graduated from high school the parents moved up to Decatur because they wanted to be someplace a little less quaint. That's not far from where my son lives in the Highlands (which I consider kind of a yuppieville). Still, lots to do there.

I personally love the North Georgia Mountains but you have to be able to get along with bubbas - lots and lots and lots of bubbas.

Athens might be a good place for you if you are looking for a little more lively place. If you have kids, they will have to become UGA fans. :)

Rents and cost of living in my area are suddenly so ridiculously expensive, it has become blaringly clear that a relocate is inevitable. But, where to relocate too?

I am sick and tired of hard winters.
Sick and tired of being broke all the time.

This economy is killing me.

My son and his fiance are moving to Georgia. The fiance says it's gorgeous there.

Georgia summers are hot as hell and twice as muggy. The country is full of obnoxious rednecks & the cities are full of obnoxious minorities.

Asheville is a great place to be. Not too expensive. Quite a few new microbreweries are opening up. Decent number of tech jobs too. People are laid back and nice. Winters not nearly as bad as what you're used to in CO. Summers are really nice.

Don't live on any coastline.......

right... especially east coast
 Quoting: Salt

Oh the coast line....

In the summer it gets hot....but on the coast line a sea breeze kicks in around 12 or 1 and it feels so good...

If I want some fish or shrimp [fresh] I just go down to a salt water creek and catch all I want....
or go out on my boat and cruise the inland water ways...

Caught 30 trout [with my son] last Saturday and have plenty in the freezer.

It was 74 degrees today with a light breeze blowing off the ocean......

Love it here in Savannah Ga........On the coast..
