Thinking of buying a Cubic Zirconium engagement ring for fiancee. Should I?

if she knows its CZ, fine. if you represent it as a diamond, no.

No. CZs are porous and will absorb things that will make the stone lose its color over time.

A better substitute is a moisanite which sparkles more than a diamond and is harder than a CZ. You will pay a lot more for a moisanite than a CZ but still save money when comparing it to the cost of a diamond.

I was just going to not represent anything at all.

If she gets it appraised and is upset about it not being a Diamond, I figure that is a sign she might be a gold digger.

If you have to ask this question... then you probably shouldn't be getting married to a woman you know nothing about.

I also on the other hand think its ridiculous for women to get huge rocks. I think it's better if you start small, then every 5 years replace the stone with a bigger one......so by the time you're married 40 years you earned that huge rock!!!

A $50 ring would probably be of softer metal that would wear out quickly or turn her finger green. I've seen some really nice looking CZ set in decent settings - you can always come back and buy the diamond later. But, discuss it with her first.

I think marriage in general is fucked because of all the idiots doing it and fucking it up for everyone else...

Manufactured diamonds are much more expensive than moisanites, and they are hard to come by and sometimes involve being on a waiting list...not kidding about the waiting.

Diamonds are a poor investment. Buy her a nice gold band and bracelet. Higher resell value after SHTF.

the lie of omission is still misrepresentation. if you can't tell her before hand that you plan to buy her a CZ, then you already know the diamond is important in her eyes. you also know some fucktard will talk her into appraisal for "insurance purposes" or some other reason. don't play games.

I have some friends who do that - they bought the first ring through a respectable store which has a trade-up policy. They trade that ring in every now and again for a bigger one.

I have to admit that I don't have a diamond (except the one I inherited from my grandmother). We couldn't afford a ring when we got married so my husband found a yellow sapphire and had it cut and a gold setting made for it. It's got a lot of sentimental value and is unique - but was inexpensive to make. You could always go that route.

Here I am thirty years later. I have a million dollars in the bank but I still don't have a diamond and I have no desire for one. I mean, I would always be worrying about losing it or having it stolen. It's just not worth the worry. I cringe when I see all these women with these huge diamond rings.

Bad move OP, she will resent you for lying to her, which is what she will feel you did. Especially once she has gone and showed it off to all her friends...if you do this make sure she knows it isn't a real diamond, probably even before you decide to give it to her...

No, don't get her a fake. Tell her you can't afford a nice diamond now, but will buy her one when your ship comes in. She should be happy with a nice wedding band, but if she's not, time to move on.

Tell her you would rather take her on a good vacation and just buy an Avon ring. My sister did this and all of the women at her work said "your husband must really love you to buy such a beutiful ring". She had a great vacation at Clearlake and all of the women at work could not tell the difference at all.
