Is religion a mental illness? Or does it exploit mental illness?

I think most people who believe in a higher power of some sort - an infinitely consistent variable that's part of every equation in existence - do so out of comfort. It benefits their personal lives and I think it's safe to say that most people have no problem with that.
However, so many people become stubborn in a belief out of fear. They think that if they even consider the possibility of being wrong, they will be punished both in this life and the following one(s) because they've been wired to think that way. If that isn't the definition of superstition, I don't know what is.
Quoting: Brian Moser see, psychedelics make a person feel like their nonsensical ramblings actually mean something either God created everything, or everything created itself though satan would have you believe otherwise, it's that simple
