Not sure about this link as it is a paid-for site (The Sunday Times) - [link to www.thesundaytimes.co.uk]

But the intro (sticking to forum fair-use percentage rules) says

"THE British Army has been ordered to take an extended 25-day Christmas holiday or “work from home” in an attempt to cut its gas and electricity bills.

In a move that former military commanders say is unprecedented, a leaked memo from a general says all military and civilian personnel in land forces — amounting to 110,000 men and women — are to take “block leave” for 25 days from December 14 until January 7.

The decision means all army barracks, Territorial Army buildings and other military sites in Britain will close for almost four weeks to provide “an opportunity for utility savings”."

This apples not just to the UK but Germany, Nepal and Brunei, Canada, Belize and Kenya.

So basically all British troops (at least in the UK) will be stationed at their homes around the country for December 2012.

Is this really a cost cutting measure? Or a way to get well-trained troops positioned around the UK without causing panic in preparation for something?

Military way of saying enjoy you last Christmas worth celebrating. Not that there won't be more dec 25's on this earth but no one will feel like celebrating.

I don't think dec 21 2012 will be anything special but extrapolating from what I see in the world we are going downhill fast and things are going to get worse before they get better

My plan to invade and usurp England is coming together. I plan to merge it with Belize by towing them together using strong magnets.

Its a little more than that. Its literally giving ALL of the forces in the United Kingdom and overseas bases an extra leave - all at the same time. It is totally unprecedented. They are literally going to leave the bases empty. Saying it is to save on 'the bills', but as many have pointed out that is a load of crap.

The actual military directive. Don't know if you can access it outside the UK.

Well, I've now had a chance to read all 4 pages of posts and still say:

This will give the military personnel the opportunity to be home with their families, if anything does go down.

God knows, we've all heard about the Dec 21/12 date and it's multitude of meanings.

Too bad all military personnel around the world, from all countries, weren't given the same directives. I'm sure they would enjoy being with their families as well at this time.

I wouldn't want to be one of "just a few soldiers" left at a base in extremely hostile territory....especially with several weeks of public (enemy) knowledge before everyone packs it in for a 4 week holiday. So, this thread remains highly doomish!

Since when does the military need a break from working something as simple as the Olympics and Jubulee?
It's not like they were fighting in a war, or not getting paid to do their job, whatever the assignment.

It's either really about saving some cash or it is a doom scenario.

Occam's Razor says that the simplest solution (or answer) is usually the right one... so, the British Army is offering extended leave to save money.

Let's face it, the UK are beyond broke, and they're desperate to save any money any way they can.

If the British military were preparing for war or some other serious, large-scale event, their bases would be absolutely alive with activity, and most, if not all leaves would be cancelled.

If there was also a realistic prospect that the UK would be attacked with nuclear weapons or even invaded, troops would be ordered to report for duty, *all* leaves would be cancelled, initial orders would be given, and then orders to disperse troops and materiel would be given.

In fact, the movement of troops and equipment off bases would be impossible to hide or ignore because the scale of activity would simply be massive.

As to the Russians moving two combat brigades to the Norwegian border, this is likely just a routine rotation of troops.

No doom here.
