I understand it is an island...but, being on the edge of Norway makes the Russians that much closer to the island.

Svalbard is special type of DMZ. There is normal people there who work and send their children to school. Never been there myself, but it is last outpost that's for sure, better for armies to stay on the fastland and neither freeze or starve. Not Seed Bank. Defending northern frontier. Please help me understand. As an American, if I think of a DMZ - I think of the DMZ between South and North Korea. The war between South and North Korea never really ended...there is only a war stoppage. Is the DMZ between Norway and Russia similar to that - is there still some sort of declared war between Norway and Russia?
