Anonymous Coward User ID: 16553491 United States 12/03/2012 11:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think what you are talking about is an asteroid impact on Earth that melted Greenland's ice sheet? If you look on Google map ...east coast United States ..then go north up to Nova Scotia you can see just north of Nova Scotia almost at the shoreline there is a huge old impact crater..looks to be mostly filled in now...but it made a large circular bay there..probably millions of years ago.. Could have been the reason we had a crustal shift of the Earth 2 million years ago..a shift which, at that time, took almost 1 million years to complete..which means nobody alive at the time would have noticed it..it was moving so slow..but eventually they would have noticed the weather patterns changing and temperatures not what they should be. Could be whats in store for us if this continues ..due to the loss of the northern hemispheres ice..and the gradual build up of the southern hemispheres ice in Antarctica. Too much weight in the southern half of our planet could eventually cause it to straighten up ..since our world is canted at an angle while it spins..it theoretically could straighten the heaviest portion being at the very bottom of our planet..causing a crustal shift. However long it takes would determine if we could survive it or not...like in the last one, which took almost a million years to finish..but if it happened allot faster..there would be almost complete devastation of all coastal cities on Earth, crop failures, massive earthquakes and tsunami's, volcanic activity beyond belief and a certainly large reduction in humanity's population globally. |

Heated hydrates in the deep ocean become gaseous methane. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24009796 Exactly but in quantities far greater than what anyone has been told. The volume of the release is so massive that scientists around the world are currently being gathered together in desperation to try to find a solution. Earth 1 Us 0 |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1347486 United States 12/04/2012 01:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Some thoughts as to why the methane hydrates are out gassing. Quoting: Dragonfly 1. Despite what the popular science wants you to believe it is not because of "man made global warming." 2. All planets in the solar system are heating up. Is that because of "man made global warming? 3. The solar system is entering into a giant cloud of hydrogen gas that is about 6,000 degrees. This gas cloud was not known until the Voyager Space Craft began feeling the effects of it. NASA sent other satellites up to find out why Voyager lost speed. They discovered a giant gas cloud 30 light years across that is already impinging on the sun's heliosphere. The solar system will be transiting this cloud for thousands of years. 4. This gas cloud is compressing the solar system and the effect is increasing as the solar system gets deeper into it. It is believed the solar system it traveling about 55,000 mph. 5. The compression causes energy to be compressed so it is more dense. 6. This is causing the sun to heat up, Saturn to become enveloped in several cloud bands so it now looks like Jupiter. Jupiter lost its big red spot for several months and then it finally came back. Mars has lost much of its polar ice caps. Earth is heating up 7. Earth has a core made of iron. This iron core is constantly crossing lines of magnetic flux as the earth rotates and flies along its orbit through other magnetic fields. 8. As the iron core cuts across lines of magnetic flux it induces eddy currents into the core. These heat it up and cause the liquid core to flow more actively. 9. The heating of the iron core transfers heat to the mantel. 10. The mantel transfers heat to the crust. 11. Deep ocean floors are deep toward the bottom of the crust. Thus they are closer to the mantel and are being heated up by the heat induced into the earth's iron core. 12. As Methane Hydrates are disturbed by increases in temperature the gas comes out of frozen suspension or melts, and gives off Methane. 13. If these hydrates are excited enough they will blow vast volumes of methane to the surface like a warm soda can explodes when opened. 14. The end result is extremely bad and depending on how much heating takes place in the iron core we will live or die. Been here a couple of years, and this is one of the few posts I've read that carries a sense of truth. But, a couple of questions: 1) Where info. on this gas cloud? 2) What other magnetic fields are you talking about Earth passing through? Thanks. |

There is no reasonable scientific proof that man has caused any climate change that has not already happened MULTIPLE times and to a MUCH GREATER DEGREE. Do not fool yourself into thinking that we are significant. If you accept as truth the idea that warming is manmade, how did man exist to create the impressive warming periods that have ended every known Ice Age? You know man did not do that. If warming turns you on, consider this: Warming is the RESULT of methane release, not its cause. The cause of the methane release can be found in geology, not in your exhaust pipe. I don't think so. It's more likely that whatever (Fluffy?) that is warming our solar system is responsible for warming the earth and setting off the methane release. I believe that the core of the earth is heating up. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28841055 However we are past the point of no return, <50 years away from disastrous effects to our climate and so many people still are proud of their ignorance on the matter. If the new models are correct we're actually looking at <10yrs my friend, we are past the point of no return and the situation is more than dire. Actually if you seriously believe in climate change you'll stop with the fringe alarmist shit like this because all it does is prove retarded people who parrot other peoples ideas and deny climate change right when it gets into spooky UFO level conspiracies from secret sources. The truth is we are in fact past the point of no return, we are looking at serious effects to artic ice in ten years, grow zones are changing and the jet stream is moving north every year changing weather patterns. With those changes the permafrost is going to be exposed and melt, letting loose all the methane/carbon from millions of years of decaying plant matter that has been sealed under feet of ice. You are looking at 40% of the worlds population seriously being displaced by 2050 because they live on coastlines and we are exceeding all sea rise expectations because climate change is accelerating. With the tropical belt expanding and humanity doing nothing to even slow the production of greenhouse gases we are not stopping this, it will destroy our crops, we won't have access to as much arable land and parts of the planet will be outright unlivable. There is plenty of real evidence from scientists, the NOAA, NASA, independent sources and thousands of scientists and sources of information dating back a hundred years out there if you look for it, so don't hurt the message and encourage anyone stupid and shortsighted enough to outright deny climate change. Utter horse shit. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 24549800 United States 12/04/2012 02:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hello gentlemen. I am very much enjoying this thread (as much as one can, considering the subject matter). Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1487396 I have a theory that I'd like to bounce off of some like-minded individuals regarding this topic. I don't think it would be too much to assume that at least some of you consider our planet a living organism itself, or herself. Many in this community have come to accept the Gaian model. Tying this in with my studies in the bio-medical field, I believe that our Mother Earth is undergoing some sort of positive feedback mechanism not too dissimilar to childbirth. In childbirth, when the fetus' head begins to press against the cervix, the hormone oxytocin is released into the bloodstream which causes the uterus to contract, further pressing the fetus' head into and through the cervix. This process continues and increases in intensity until the infant exits the birth canal. The positive feedback loop also known as a vicious cycle or a runaway train. They are used in nature to accelerate and facilitate change. (Contrary to negative feedback loops which are used to mitigate change or encourage homeostasis). So the methane in the atmosphere raises global temperatures and causes more methane to be released from its frozen prisons causing an acceleration in the rise of global temperatures. Whew, that was a really long-winded way to lead into my simple question. I just wanted to make sure everyone was on the same level and I always have a habit of speaking in metaphors and analogies....Continuing with my child-birthing analogy, in your opinion(s), what was the catalyst to start this cycle (pressure on the cervix)? And what is the end state (It's a boy!)? Or is there an outside force working on Gaia's body, such as an infection? Maybe humanity? The outside force is the child, a binary star pulling and pushing or perhaps proximity to the galactic plane. Alignment.. There is no infection... |

Quoting: itsamadmadworld IMO, quite simply: It is Mother Earth's response after enduring decades of sheer abuse and disrespect from "mankind" (a true oxymoron). Human beings, comprising the most ignorant and greedy species in the universe, continue to subject this great planet to whatever treatment they choose, without thought or care, and they are fools to have ever believed she would not eventually fight back.
