The reason for the season, winter, spring, summer, and fall, is the SUN.
The winter solstice marks the beginning of winter. The sun is at its lowest point above the horizon, then it "turns" and begins ascending. This has been celebrated for thousands of years as the "nativity of the SUN". Since "God" created the sun, it's the "nativity of the SUN of God".

Jesus' birth was made to coincide with the "nativity of the sun" because "Jesus" is the personification of the sun.

The RCC had a funny habit of combining Festivles(?sp) & Holidays to make those they "converted" feel a little more "at Home", like they didn't give everything up.
