Israel faced a concerted diplomatic offensive when the US urged it to “reconsider” plans for another 3,000 settler homes on occupied land and Britain summoned the ambassador for a formal protest.

Britain also considered the unprecedented step of withdrawing its ambassador from Israel, according to a Whitehall source on Monday, although Matthew Gould, the British envoy in Tel Aviv, was not recalled.
