Why are people so shallow, materialistic and cruel to one another?
Seriously, it's like they are so judgmental of one another. And most of them that are materialistic are greedy for completely stupid things. They place value in the wrong places and items even. They're so focused on being hip and trendy that they lose focus on what's really important. Things like spending time with loved ones and people who you care about. Things like taking the time to gain a little wisdom every once in a while. And most importantly taking the time and energy into caring! Tell me what you think. Am I right or wrong?

I resent being called shallow and materialistic!

Princess, huh? Are you hot looking?

Sorry...just needed to joke a little.

Sorry to tell you...people are born with a "sinful nature." That doesn't mean they are "born guilty," but, it does mean that they have the propensity to do evil.

I made this name as a type of mockery to the White Shoe Law Firm who work for Wall Street. I don't really think of myself as a princess. I'm more of a cook and a farmer then anything else.

But, you do work for the law firm, right? Are you hot looking?

I am still sorry...joking mood...real tired :-)

My bigger question than yours is: What made you notice it now? Something must have happened. You didn't just this morning wake up and think to yourself, "Gee, the world is shallow, materialistic and cruel...I guess I'll post something on GLP about this new phenomenon." What made you see it? What makes you state it on GLP?

On some level I've noticed it for most of my life time. I noticed how people always flocked to certain groups depending on their "Social Status" and it always made me wonder. The fact that I woke up 4 years ago to the fact that people are just consumers only alive for the purpose of consuming hasn't helped either. There are too many things I could talk about on this subject. It's been a process of years in the making, but even with the hardships I'm glad I went through it so that I could be able to lift up the spirits of other people around me.

No matter what you look like...please tell us you are some ravenously beautiful lady with long flowing hair...

Now...for the more serious stuff...so, it was a process that took you to this point. I take it you are "grown up." Were you more rejected or accepted by people as you grew up? Sorry (I know I have been kidding with you along these lines) but, I have to ask: Were you considered pretty while growing up? Did you come from "money" or was your upbringing middle-class or poor? I am trying to see what your past looks like, so I can understand why you are stating things like people are cruel and materialistic. What, over time, caused you to take your present view?

I am not analyzing you...I am just curious. We (those who have a a similar view) came to our view via various routes...I am wondering how you got "here."

I've been asking myself the same thing forever, it seems. I don't know why. I do know it's even more prevalent today than it was just a few years ago. Sad reflection on our society, isn't it?

The system is designed to take our faith away. We rely so much of this system, and when the system has a meltdown, so will you.

Faith is gained by living a simple life, putting pureness in our system, not artificial food, beliefs, propaganda, lies, etc.

Re: Why are people so shallow, materialistic and cruel to one another?
I think this seems to be very common in the US. I have noticed a distinct difference in the way my US cousins act compared to my cousins in Italy. My son broke his leg and I posted a picture on facebook. Not one single person in my family that lives in the US called. Every cousin in Italy either called or emailed me within the next 24 hours, plus my Uncles & Aunts all called my father when they found out from their children.

Anyone else notice anything similar?

I suppose I had a normal upbringing compared to a lot of children. Neither me or my sister received much attention from our parents. I fit in well with a lot of children in my neighborhood, but never EVER fit in at school. I guess it was just something to do with me being so left handed and not really in tune with the left brained way they would teach everyone. As I've gotten older I noticed how people only cared about buying the newest toys/electronics and crap they didn't need. Any of that that was in me slowly left me. There are a lot of other things but I'd have to type a whole book to describe it.

Hello OP,

Speaking of the last days; this is penned over 1500 years ago:

"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be:

lovers of their own selves
covetous
boasters
proud
blasphemers
disobedient to parents
unthankful
unholy,
without natural affection
truce breakers
false accusers
incontinent
fierce
despisers of those that are good
traitors
heady
high-minded
lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God... "

Television, movies, Internet, and other media has had a much more profound and negative effect than anyone could possibly have imagined. It has drowned out all other morality and it is driven by consumption and materialism.

In the old days, you compared yourself to the handful of people around you. Now people compare themselves (and each other) to rock-stars, movie starlets, etc. because these characters they see on their screens are more real to them than the flesh and blood people around them. Most people in a big city don't even know their neighbors anymore.

I am a bit lost. I do not understand how the "left handed" part fits in. I guess because I am right handed I can only guess at how hard it is to grow up left handed...but...that doesn't seem to be the sort of thing that would make people see the world as materialistic...cruel, yes...materialistic...no..

Sorry...still tired...listening to tunes...
I am listening to (if you are a "metal" head...some "symphonic Christian metal" I found the other day...)
[link to www.youtube.com]
Actually kind of "pretty" metal..not thrash and not old school...I digress...

Back...what triggered you recently though? I am presuming there was some commercial...or some exorbitant price that you came across or something that triggered the knowledge going from "tacit" to "explicit"....you knew it in your head, but couldn't express it exactly....to now, where you know the world is cruel and materialistic...and can express it?

Re: Why are people so shallow, materialistic and cruel to one another?
I live in an affluent area and my children go to a private school that costs about $10,000 a year. And I have 3 kids attending. You should see the cunt whore mothers at this school. In a collapsed scenario I could only pray they get raped to death. Worse than any breed of human.

My wife and I are hippied out a little bit. Not materialistic at all. We chose the school because public school is not an option and this is the only alternative except home school which we also do. Some of the moms at this place are horrible. Their kids are all screwed up in the head. One lady won't even let her 5 year old child touch her because it might screw up her wardrobe. Another left her child in the school office all day with bad pink eye because it was her "spa day". Bitchez should be shot. I told one of them she was fucked up in the head and she went off on a venemous spat at the top of her lungs. Keep in mind this is a religious school.

They look down at me and my wife because I wear surf gear and could give a fuck but little do they know my fam is worth more in a day than they'll make in a lifetime.

At the end of last year as a slap in all their faces I made a $100,000 donation to the school and i let it be known. This year all those bitches have seriously been trying to sleep with me and all started dressing down like us.

Moral of the story, people for the most part are broken. This world needs to be reset and idiots taught a serious lesson. I don't hope for world doom but we could really use it. I'd love to see those pieces of shit digging in a trash can. I'd probably clip them with my truck and send them flying.

I think people would be less shallow, materialistic and cruel to each other if most people would just learn to dress more stylish and drive nicer cars.

Re: Why are people so shallow, materialistic and cruel to one another?
In a nutshell, when a person is insecure about who they are or what they believe, criticizing others is the easiest way to create reassurance.

What's actually happening though is that through a process called neuroplasticity, they are unintentionally rewiring their brain to continue thinking that way. The same process that teaches us how to control our fingers through experience or become addicted to cigarettes through habit forces the brain to keep the individual locked into a routine.

In other words, for one to stop being cynical as an initial reaction all the time, they need to train themselves to see things differently. The irony is that the pessimistic mentality makes it more difficult to see the reason in doing so.
