I stopped. No stupid meaningless decorations, trees, or holiday "celebration" for me anymore. It's liberating.

LOL, you cant answer.
I give gifts to others on Christmas because I want to.
If I decide this year that I want to give gifts, I will.
If I decide this year that I do not want to give gift, I wont.
I have not bought gifts yet, I may decide either way at this point.
Not everyone feels obligated to participate because of tradition or religion. Some people can choose for themselves just based on what they want to do.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27162552

So if you decide not to participate do you refuse to accept gifts too?
 Quoting: ming

I do not want any gifts. What other people do I can not control.
I really agree with your post just above. I try to be polite about it too when someone tries to give me a gift.
My family is pagan in their beliefs and they have gone over the top before. Even though every year they ask me what do I want and I say nothing every time, they still get something and still I tell them it is unnecessary. They do not act like I am obligated to give gifts or receive them. But they do it because they want to. And they stopped giving me presents on my birthday at my request. Which I am pretty happy about.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27162552

Your family seem pretty cool. My family usually send me a little money at the start of the new year, its kind of our tradition. They don't do the gift thing with me anymore, although my gran and one aunt donate to charity for me at Xmas. They're the only Christians in my family and were very pleased when I suggested it years ago. All my family send greetings cards with a letter written in, which I appreciate as I live in a different country and rarely see them.
Out of this ugliness may come,
Some day, so beautiful a flower,
That men will wonder at that hour,
Remembering smoke and flowerless slum,
And ask-glimpsing the agony
Of the slaves who wrestle to be free-
'But why were all the poets dumb?'
-William Montgomerie

So many gods, so many creeds,
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs.

"Christians", why do you buy gifts for each other on the 25th of December?

Is because:

1. You're not educated on the subject?
2. You follow what the masses do?
3. You're a pagan?
4. Or other?

Please elaborate if it is option 4.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8449454

4. Other.

What's wrong with buying a present for someone you care about, and let me ask you the question in reverse...what is so evil about giving people present on December 25th?

It's a logic fail to say that it's perfectly fine on any other of the 365 days of the year, but not on that one particular day.

Matthew 25:40

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Basically, the wise men brought gifts for Jesus...when we give to each other, we are giving to Him. Well, it is supposed to be this way...not really in this day and age as most could care less about Jesus.

You need to learn to rightly divide the Word of God. Matthew 20:40 is not talking about gifts. Read above and get the subject of what Jesus is talking about. Than read below 40 and find out what Jesus is going to do. You cannot take one verse and make what you want out of it.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26125917

There is nothing wrong with giving someone a gift on any day.

There is however a group of pagan customs revolving around the Winter Solstice as a celebrated day(s) of giving. These rituals involve the wrapping of gifts in colorful wraps, decorated evergreen trees indoors, fancy bright decorations around the house, holly, mistletoe, wreaths, and a few other similar pagan rituals. They collectively have been incorporated into a Catholic holiday ostensibly to celebrate Jesus' birthday that they call Christ's Mass, or Christmas for short.

So if someone participates in these ritualistic activities while giving gifts around the winter solstice time, they are actually participating in those old pagan rituals, whether they are aware of it or not.

Several pagans I've discussed this with get a private laugh out of all the Christians who do not know where the source of their Christmas activities originate.

I believe this is simply an instructional thread to make people aware of this fact.

Happy birthday Jesus, and mankind who Jesus died for. I think in reality it was in october... We chose the 25 because on this day the star of bethlehem appears and was directly over where Jesus was born...I think.
I enjoy buying gifts personaly, wether its christmas or birthdays, or whenever. My wife and dont buy gifts for each other on xmas because we do this all year long.

Sure, bitch. I will answer why I buy gifts, not why others do nor will I bother going into the history of the pagan celebration, none it has anything to do with why I do what I do.

I buy gifts because I can. That's it.

My kids need shit, I get it for them. Of course I could buy their clothes and books and what not any other day of the year and I do but I see no harm in buying stuff and wrapping it up and letting them have a bit of fun on Christmas day. Everything they get is useful and needed so I don't see it as a waste.

I'm not religious.

Why on the 25th of December?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8449454

Because it's Christmas. Billions of people celebrate. Family and friends get extended vacations from work, we are all able to get together. I grew up celebrating Christmas, I like it, I will continue to do it every year.

What's your issue with the 25th??

Why do you not approve of people celebrating and gifting on that particular day?
 Quoting: Debauchery

For me its the issue of wastefulness, and being forced to partake in something I don't enjoy. It's only recently people have stopped forcing gifts upon me, and inundating me with greetings cards(handing someone an Xmas card whilst saying merry Xmas in person at the same time is ludicrous). But i still have to deal with strangers trying to hug and/or kiss me, asking if I "got anything good", and being hounded into going places I don't want to go, with people I usually avoid, to have plates overfilled with food I'll never be able to manage and will end up in the bin, surrounded with drunks, and all of this on the basis of "oh come on, you have to, its Christmas!"

So for someone who feels offended by the gluttony, greed, and wastefulness of the season, its UNAVOIDABLE! That's the problem. You're all ragging on OP for foisting their opinion on you, but for me the WHOLE MODERN WORLD forces this stuff on me for the entire season. My other halfs family all bought me gifts a few years ago even though I'd made it clear I wouldn't appreciate it. Told me "its all about giving" and, due to my being polite upon receiving them "see, we'll get you to like christmas!"

Interesting how their giving spirit evaporated once I thanked them for their gifts and informed them I'd donated them to charity. Apparently their generosity applies only to people who's ethics they want to shit on, and not to the less-fortunate and needy.

I'm aware that there are plenty of people who celebrate in an appropriate way, good for them. I'm sure those same people wouldn't force. me to take part against my will. Most people just get crazy over the top, and they need to back off.
 Quoting: ming

Step back.

I didn't rag on OP for foisting his opinion on me. If he doesn't want to celebrate I take no issue with it.

What I do take issue with is him and people like him ragging on me because I do. It's not your business or any one elses what I do.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it." Amen.

It's not your business. You don't want to partake so you force your attitude & beliefs towards the holidays down every ones throat, call them names and refuse to answer simple questions. You still haven't answered why you find gift giving on the 25th so evil and horrible. You give nothing but the standard and generic answer about sheeple.

You're as bad as the bible thumping Christians that preach hell fire and brimstone every single day on GLP.

LOL.

You are full of shit, bro wink

I'm a sister, not a bro.

You are the one full of shit.

You tend to think only your opinion counts. You listen to no one else. No matter what anyone has said you've come back with the same tired old lines.

Anyway..I have to go wrap presents and make an obscenely disgusting light display outside of my home.

God bless!

Have a nice day, sheepleton.

Re: Someone tell me, why do people buy gifts for each other on Christmas?
Why do you give a fuck what other people do on December 25th?

You obviously don't celebrate and you obviously have no use for the holiday, why must you piss on those that enjoy the day? Does it make you feel better about yourself to whine about something so trivial when there's so much other shit going on out in the world you could instead focus your anger and bitterness on?
 Quoting: Debauchery

Why the fuck are you so aggressive, bitch?

Do you have the answer to my original question?

Yeah man ..the Xmas thing is a waste of time. It's a dead tradition being fueled by mindless consumers.

Re: Someone tell me, why do people buy gifts for each other on Christmas?
The oft quoted verse in the Bible refers to the construction of an idol as the custom of the Christmas tree originated in Germany. German born Victoria and Albert started to put one up in Buckingham Palace for their children in honour of the customs of their homeland. From there there the custom of the Christmas tree spread to the British ruling class and then throughout society and the western world. Boxing Day also originated in Victorian England along with the Christmas card.

The point being is that these are cultural custom and I'm sick of yids from Australia and elsewhere mocking my cultural traditions.

Go stuff a holiday candelabra up your ass.

And leave my Christmas tree alone.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28823587

The idea of trees as idols, bringing in evergreens in the winter, and decorating trees and your house with bright decorations during pagan holidays is very ancient.

Although the modern interpretation of the Christmas tree seems to be from Germany in the 1500's, the European pagan traditions concerning evergreens & ornaments go all the way back into ancient times and ancient lands.

Here's the bible verse concerning ancient pagans that cut down & propped up trees & then decorated them:

[link to www.biblegateway.com]

I don't think the Renaissance Germans invented the idea of winter solstice decorations and winter evergreens, although I think they expanded on earlier pagan rituals. These rituals have been with us throughout the ages.

There are many old and complimentary pagan traditions that appear to have given rise to the modern Christmas tree. Here are just a few of them:

[link to www.history.com]

I encourage you to read through the link above to see all the similarities and some of the early attitudes against the Christmas tree and other pagan rituals.

When looked at holistically, it seems apparent to me that much of the overlapping ancient pagan customs had evolved and endured into Europe and eventually into the US over time.

It's true that Christmas and its tree has become an ingrained cultural phenomenon that not only endures to today, but in many ways has surpassed it's era of Christian-orientated existence. Most of the varied rituals that we know of today as "Christmas" themes began life before the advent of Christ as pagan rituals. And now they've outlasted the "Christ" element of Christmas, and now exist in the post-Christian modern secular world of Jesus-free "X-mas" that so many non-Christians celebrate today.

It's funny and sad to me that most atheists that I talk to about Christmas easily understand, and have previous knowledge of, the pagan concepts that make up Christmas, even as discussions that I have with Christians mostly result in either complete ignorance or outright self-delusion and denial concerning this matter.

So if you want to celebrate Christmas, that's on you. I can't tell you what you can't celebrate. It's simply my job to educate people on the pagan origins of their holiday. There's no harm in learning something new.

You then, will need to take responsibility for your own educated actions.

Your job!?!??! It's your job to educate me on the pagan origins of the reverence for evergreens and the Christmas tree. Like I don't know?

Fuck right off you pompous asshole.

Re: Someone tell me, why do people buy gifts for each other on Christmas?
I,m not sure why others buy or do not buy gifts at Christmas time.

We are not religious at our house, certainly not members of any organized religions.

We buy the kids of relatives gifts just to spread some joy and since it is near the end of the year we often buy ourselves a little something too if the money is available.

It's more about making the family kids happy and giving them nice Christmas memories to remember when they are older.

To me the holidays are about tying up loose ends at the end of the year, getting ready to begin a new year and having a little fun by spreading some smiles and enjoying the season.

Re: Someone tell me, why do people buy gifts for each other on Christmas?
You know it's amazes me how many attack Christmas..The most perfect gift hope of the world, and it's not all about buying gifts for people you care about, but that's still a nice gesture, if you can somehow still afford it.. one time a year a celebration of pure love, peace on earth and good will towards ALL men.. and people attack, attack, attack..

Why is that? Because Evil, the dark side always attacks truth, light and goodness. Not a one of you idiots nit pick the crazy mess that goes on all though out the year with other religious holidays..Like beating one self to a bloody pulp, marching around a rock.

If you don't want to buy gifts, then don't, if you don't want to celebrate Christmas, then don't.
It's that simple, No one cares if you do or don't.

You're doing the devil's bidding.

And the fact is the reason for buying gifts for Christmas again: because the wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus..Same reason we buy birthday presents for people on their birthday.. that's where/why the all that started to. Don't matter if you to dumb to know it or not.

I can't afford to buy things I used to, Have have little left to celebrate anymore. But I will celebrate Christmas!
