Patrick Stewart: 1987, the year Star Trek TNG, started coincided with a significant drop in USA funding of the Space Race, particularly of NASA. The US Gov't. and CIA actually funded Star Trek partly in an effort to distract the US public away from this fact. (paraphrasing) Sounds like he is joking around, but there is often truth in humour.
