A homeless man just offered to trade me his pair of boots for my dessert.

I think that I'd give him the dessert and he can keep the boots.
In response to your question, You're the one with the dessert to start with - why wouldn't he want one as well?

Let him keep his boots and just give him a dessert. Cold times are upon us so we need to take care of our fellow man.

Just like feeding birds in winter, you don't expect to get anything in return from birds, so why would this poor man have to give up his boots for something to eat.
