I was stationed on the border and my comrades and I had an agreement that if on patrol a person wad attempting to escape communism we would assist them by any and all means even if it meant violating our orders.

The escapee would have to get thru the primary fence, then cross a minefield of about 1K distance, then cross a patrol road visible to guard towers and then climb a fence to our side. The plan was that if somebody made it that far and the GAKs were after them we'd open up with the M-60 and whatever else we had. So...nobody ever managed to escape? There was a cross erected on our side for a man and his son who didn't make it. It was next to impossible what with modern technology and all. I went across and saw it all, met people and all that. It was like something out of a post-apocalyptic horror show. I'll never forget.
