vit D go out side and work
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29015106

Not everyone can get enough sun in all parts of the country 12 months out of the year.

I was deficient in Vit D. My level was 14 and I took 50,000 IUs of D3 weekly for six months and brought my level up to 42. Just found that out from another blood test. I still want to bring it up further.

More people than not are deficient in D. You can't get enough of it from food and if you can't get enough every day from the sun you need to take D3. And along with that take Magnesium.
 Quoting: truthwillsetyoufreeagain

Wow. That's pretty low. Did you take D2? D3 is supposed to be a lot better and hell as cheap OTC.

Edit: I see that you took d3. Doctors usually go with D2.
 Quoting: AlcoholicRunner

I just wrote a whole thing and lost it. Grrrrr.

Basically my doctor, who is older, doesn't take D deficiency seriously, as many don't. I asked for the blood test and when he saw the result of 14 said that I should take 1000 IUs daily for three months. That was after telling him that I had been taking 1500 for two years. BTW, this is through his website messaging system, so it's not verbal communication back and forth.

When I reminded him that I had been taking 1500, he then prescribed the prescription of 50,000 D2. I did my own research on D2 and saw that it wasn't as nearly effective as the over the counter D3. So I wrote to him telling him that and he sent me back some research he did agreeing that D3 is far better and told me to take D3, without telling me how much to take. I decided to take 50,000 weekly of the D3. I let him know that, but he didn't seem all that interested.

BTW, I've been to the D Council website. It's an excellent source of info.

oil of oregano
grapefruit seed extract
say two or three lbs kratom resin for non scheduled narcotic pain relief.
stinging nettle
yerba mate
nelumbo nucifera stamens

but honestly im not on a budget with that and I make all my own extracts. so i have a dorm fridge full of stuff material both raw and refined, i rotate extract on a 4 year plan, and my wife and I both wildcraft every spring and summer and put up what medicinal / edible plants we pick.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6524811

I heard about kratom and did some research, found there's different kinds... what's the best kind, form and dosage for pain?... seems like some take it for a high?!?!, would like maybe to have it around for pain, but confused as to what and how so, I left it alone!

I have a friend who is a herbalist and she strongly recommended the herb rosemary ( as tea) for a general tonic and anti oxidant. One of the strongest antioxidant herbs easily available. It grows easily from cuttings.. And is also great for hiding the flavor of the possum and coon meat you will be eating.

Lately she is promoting Gotu Kola ( Centella asiatica) which is more of a warm climate herb/ vegetable. We are growing it in pots to get thru the winter. In the right place.. wet and shady.. it grows prolifically. Google it for more info. It is supposed to be anti cancer and a good heath promoting herb.

Blueberries are considered a super food.. and most berries have lots of anti oxidants .. and vitamins like C.

Eventually you will run out of pills.. a varied diet will be the only way to get all the nutrients.

However.. in areas which are mineral deficient.. NZ is iodine deficient... it would pay to have a big long term stock.. and it is usually cheapest to buy from a livestock store, and then figure out the dose ( CAREFULLY) usually only a drop a day of a diluted solution.

slightly off track but still relevent I think is this:

whe tshtf most things will become scarce so a good idea is also to find a good energy source so you can survive a lot more easily. I found this so I made a smll one myself, dont know whether youve heard of them b4 but they do work, its a geet generator/fuel delivery system, it basically uses the electromagnetic field to shred all types of fluidsand ignites them into plasma, runs any engine on any fuel - dirty water urine soda-pop caffiene etc - with a small amount of oil base fluid like parafin, diesel, petrol, white spirits, nail varnish remover etc,
just thought it was good to post for you, you can make a small one with a strimmer engine, i got 1 for £10 spent £17 on parts and it works.
engine size is irreleven - fuel particle size determines how big the geet is. I'll post a link to the generator and a link to a youtube vid where theyre running lots of things 4 you.

Re: Which vitamins and supplements would you stockpile for when the SHTF with limited funds?
If you're serious about preparing with limited funds, I'd read my postings here:
Thread: Last minute tips for parents when the SHTF

There's over 800 tips there, intentially broken down into bite sized chunks to help people digest many of the most important principles for preparedness especially on a budget.

Yes, get some good stress vitamins. Those dosages are higher since under stress you might need a lot more (within reason since high vitamin A is bad for you).

Many vitamins only offer a portion of what you need. The reason is simple: you're getting many vitamins in what you eat on a daily basis.

Few of us are missing essential vitamins since many foods are fortified. The reason they did that was a lot of people weren't getting adequate nutrition based upon the food quality of what they were eating. For example neural tube defects are caused by eating inadequate levels of folic acid while the mother is pregnant. Since many women don't know when they're pregnant until some time afterward, it was added.

If anyone in your family is of child bearing years, then have maternity vitamins or similar is a good idea. Likewise your children should have special vitamins for their needs.

What would be BEST would be to take the time to learn which plants to consume in order to get those vitamins. In that topic I discuss the best plants to support women through pregnancy (since some plants wouldn't be as beneficial). Calcium is a big troubling one since you won't be able to source milk in a collapse.

Expect the same nutritional issues found during the time of the Great Depression: pellagra, rickets, scurvy, goiters (low iodine), etc. Iodine can be sourced from seafood, but that doesn't help most people who live far from the sea. You can create iodine from the green hulls of walnuts.

It's naturally added to salt in most cases. Salt will be like currency post-collapse. I discusses how people near the ocean could methodically create sea salt there too.

Many herbs can act like medications if you learn how to take them. It depends upon your specific needs. Over in that topic, I discussed the most common ailments, and how to prepare for their treatment: fever reducer, bleeding, dyssentery, diarhea, skin rashes, stomach ache, etc.

Prepping is not about using up lots of money. It can be, but that's not how our ancestors did it. They learned how to supplement from foraging. If you can learn, then you'll be better prepared. You'll eventually run out of things.

Many plants fix multiple issues, but the harvest time varies. Since others will be looking too, the areas where they grow will likely be overharvested. It's wisdom to learn multiple ways to fix common issues. Even as a nine year old, I knew ten basic plants. They commonly grow around your home. Things like common plantain, dandelion, honeysuckle, hibiscus, purslane, mullein, etc. You need duplication since that way you know multiple things to try to harvest and preserve.

If you buy them all, you'll be better prepared, but it would be expensive. If you learn them all, you'll be much better off, and most can be easily sourced.

50,000 IU vitamin D3 pills for sure. Basically universe vaccine against many types of bacteria and virus.

WRONG. The safe daily dosage for an adult is 400 IU of Vitamin D.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9943244

Wrong! You must work for the (lying)FDA.

Your body produces 20,000 to 30,000 IU's per HOUR when 50% of your skin is exposed in direct sunlight.

I have been taking 5,000 to 10,000 per day for the last three years. Not one upper respiratory infection, cough or sore throat when I would normally get sick twice a year.

There are two categories of vitamins - water soluble and fat soluble. Vitamins like C are water soluble meaning you can take more than your body will process safely and you will just urinate out the excess. Fat soluble ones are not expended though. If you take more than your body can process then you can poison yourself. The fat soluble ones include Vitamins A, D, E, K. I would recommend a good multi-vitamin to keep things simple, safe, and with benefit.

What vitamins herbs or supplements would be the most important to add to your stockpile on a limited budget?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27768994

500 mg Fishmox and 500 mg Fishpen pill bottles, can be bought on internet or petstore and good for human consumption.

1000 mg vitamin c pills
5000 mg vitamin D13 pills
Echenacia suppliments

All three of the above maintain a healthy as heck immune system, I take them every day. Not the Mox or Pen, those are only for infections.

Iodine tablets in case of radiation.

Magnesium if you have high blood pressure.

Also, a good supply of multi-vitamin and mineral tablets.

Re: Which vitamins and supplements would you stockpile for when the SHTF with limited funds?
I hope people reading this topic understand that all protein is not the same. It's made of differing amounts of amino acids. If you don't vary your diet in a collapse, you'll get protein deficency. It's why there are complex lists in preparedness manuals so that you can cheaply provide good nutrition for your family.

I'd definitely pre-order the maximum on any prescriptions (usually three months) for insurance reasons. Then I'd look up what common herb I might take in its absence. That way if you have an issue with Type 2 Diabetes, then you'd have some means of helping yourself in a collapse.

Then, I'd look at seeds for specific plants and how to grow them. I'd also look at local plants that might do the trick. It'll be very imperfect, won't it?

A supplement that you're probably NOT thinking about is sugar. Our ancestors who lived during the time of the Great Depression were thin, sometimes rail thin. As the body undergoes starvation, it uses up glycogen in your muscles and liver, and people's faces get lean and drawn. The best way to offset that is to have lots of inexpensive sugar or honey.

GLP is great, but you need to sit down and make an intentional nutritional plan and calculate what foods to cheaply provide nutrition. Vitamins are great to supplement. Most of your vitamins are in your food. Read the labels carefully, because otherwise you'll end up with a calcium defficentcy from taking too little.

I've seen some great ideas here, but don't think that all you need is to take a pill. Growing some garlic will dramatically help your chances medically to survive versus taking some garlic from a bottle.

YES!!!

The number one item you need to stock up on is GARLIC!

Garlic Is a Natural Antibiotic that has Been Used for Thousands of Years

>>>I learned that Louis Pasteur studied the antibacterial properties of garlic. I learned that Hippocrates dispensed it.

Additionally, I learned that modern researchers found garlic to have the broadest spectrum of any antimicrobial substance that we know of — it is antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiprotozoan and antiviral.” I also found out that unlike modern medicine's antibiotics, which are failing to conquer the new "superbugs," garlic remains a powerhouse against them. <<<

[link to everydaysimplicity.blogspot.com]

Actually its best to buy a medicinal herb book so that you can harvest your own "medicine." God put everything we need to heal ourselves on this planet. It's up to us to figure out what the plants are and how to use them.

Take for example the dreaded Dandelion that grows in most yards. People spend lots of time and money trying to kill the "weeds." I eat them. You can make dandelion fritters, dandelion wine, eat the young leaves, and the roots can be dried, ground, and used in place of coffee. (the dried root idea came from my mother who lived through the depression)

Dandelions are loaded with vitamins and minerals too.

[link to www.leaflady.org]

>>>According to the USDA Bulletin #8, "Composition of Foods" (Haytowitz and Matthews 1984), dandelions rank in the top 4 green vegetables in overall nutritional value. Minnich, in "Gardening for Better Nutrition" ranks them, out of all vegetables, including grains, seeds and greens, as tied for 9th best. According to these data, dandelions are nature's richest green vegetable source of beta-carotene, from which Vitamin A is created, and the third richest source of Vitamin A of all foods, after cod-liver oil and beef liver! They also are particularly rich in fiber, potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and the B vitamins, thiamine and riboflavin, and are a good source of protein.<<<

We drink a tea during flu season that I make from olive leaf and stinging nettle and black tea with peppermint to cover the bitterness of the olive leaf. Of course, we have garlic oil and powder on hand but the tea has kept us cold and flu free for years and I believe in a diverse stock of herbs to have on hand.

During the summer if we feel a cold might be starting, we drink a shot glass of Colloidal Silver every few hours and are symptom free the next day.

Olive leaf has also been credited with helping to remove radiation from your body.
