| Bowyn Aerrow User ID: 28433574 12/03/2012 08:42 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Back when I was a kid on the farm in Kentucky oh 1979-1980, we had a sudden freeze over night, a perfectly calm night, no wind, no clouds. The pond was perfectly clear of ice while the water barrel had a thick sheet. My father tossed a tiny pebble into the middle of the pond and ice suddenly developed from the ripple. it took about 3 minutes for the whole surface of the pond to get a thick layer of ice. A pond a bit over 100 feet in diameter. The surface water had been super cooled (to around 25F) during the night, but since it was very clean and very still it remained a liquid until disturb. The water in the barrel was collected rain water and being contaminated with dust and debris it froze with the temperature drop. The conditions setting up for the sudden freezing of the ice were several cool days with little to no wind, thus allowing sediments to settle out of the surface water, followed by a sudden deep freeze of around 20F with no wind or rain or anything.
