Everyone knows the government only puts things out there like this when one of two things are true.

Either it ABSOLUTELY will NOT happen.
or it ABSOLUTELY WILL happen.

Given the tizzy that the world is in, and the rate of decay of everything, and the accuracy of the mayans to predict things such as winter solstices, moon cycles, the transit of planets, etc. Which do you find is more likely? Can anyone guarantee NOTHING will happen? Probably not, so clearly they think SOMETHING WILL.

Ours ends on Dec. 31, then guess what? It flips over to a NEW
calendar.

If the Mayans had stuck around, they would have had time to make a NEW long count calendar.

The most sad part about that statement is that our Government lies to us so friggin' much and so BIG that it actually reinforces peoples belief that something tragic will in fact happen on 21 DEC 12. I for one, will be recovering from a hang over from the company christmas party the night before.
