Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1492246 Important to note, the NERC report has no data to back it up, its basically utility company guys sitting around bullshitting about the problem and how to downplay it. Which basically means that if FERC report is ok, then power infrastructure will be affected for several years. |

The issue is that we aren't building on top of our old infrastructure, we're replacing it with new, far more delicate systems that are ever more efficient, but also easier to disrupt. Think of that thumb drive that can now fit all the books in your library on it in text form. Pretty cool in one way, but on the other hand its hard to accidentally drop that library in your toilet. We're building a society that can fit in the palm of somebody's hand, that can be massively disrupted through small events. The people trying to warn us of this are our friends. |

It can take 12-18 months to replace the transformer. We anticipate catastrophic failure at some pint in time. Since a Carrington type event is inevitable. Why not replace the fucking things BEFORE they blow. Shit, we knew this years ahead of time. We should have replacements for the replacements by now. |

Frankly, the loss of electrical power and modern telecommunications worldwide would be catastrophic culturally, in the sense of the likely failure of effective social leadership. Global life-expectancy figures would likely become inverted in favour of third-world societies who are closest to traditional subsistence economies. Frankly, the UK needs to re-institute the Home Guard as a respected volunteer body, and rewarded with the right to bear arms, with the aim of enlarging its membership to assume as much as possible of the functions of our present armed forces, Police, Fire and Ambulance services, UK Border Agency and Civil Service in general. I would like us to have the ruggedly independent defence posture of the Swiss. Otherwise, in the event of the next Carrington event, we are going to wind up with the next best doom to a Zombie Apocalypse. |

There are two risks that result from the introduction of GICs to the bulk power system: * Damage to bulk power system assets, typically associated with transformers, and * Loss of reactive power support, which could lead to voltage instability and power system collapse. Restoration times of the power system from these two risks [damage to transformers and voltage instability] are significantly different. For example, restoration times from system collapse due to voltage instability would be a matter of hours to days, while replacing transformers requires long-lead times (a number of months) to replace or move spares into place, unless they are in a nearby location. Therefore, the failure of a large number of transformers would have considerable impacts on large portions of the system:' See the Chart on page 15 - it show all of the EAST as far as Indiana and Oregon and Washington for the areas that will have a Effects on the U.S. Power Grid Restoration times of the power system from these two risks [damage to transformers and voltage instability] are significantly different.
