The UN passes a resolution, calling on the Israeli regime to quickly open its nuclear program to inspection and join the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) “without further delay.”

The 193-member UN General Assembly on Monday passed the resolution 174 to six with six abstentions, urging Tel Aviv to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to have access to its nuclear facilities.

Only the US, Canada, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau voted against the resolution that reflects international concern about suspicious Israeli nuclear activities.

Israel, the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, is widely known to have between 200 and 400 nuclear warheads.

Taking the floor in explanation of position following the vote, the representative of Syria said that, during the Assembly’s general debate and the substantive debates of the First Committee, all statements made had welcomed the convening of a conference aimed at creating a zone free of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. That conference had been slated to take place in Finland at the end of 2012. However, not enough optimism had been demonstrated, and the United Nations had not forecast the possibility that the conference might not be held “at the whim of just one party”. That party itself had nuclear weapons and was far from complying with international requirements. Indeed, Israel had underscored that it was premature to hold such a conference, using as a pretext the idea that implementing such a zone would demand preconditions and a change of direction in the region. That argument flouted the fact that Israel was the only country in the region that was a nuclear threat.

In addition, he said, the United States, one of the sponsors of the conference, had called for it to be cancelled due to the “conditions” in the Middle East. Syria was surprised that those irresponsible statements had not been condemned by countries that generally called for the principles of democracy, legality, international law and non-proliferation, as well as the sacred nature of the NPT. They had remained silent, in a threatening and dangerous precedent, which undermined the United Nations. “This is a matter of credibility for the international community” as well as of good faith, he said in that respect.

The delegate of Israel, he recalled, had said discussions in the Committee had resembled an “absurdist piece of theatre”, and he had accused other parties in order to turn eyes away from the true nuclear threat in the Middle East. Israel must comply with its international obligations and abandon its “enormous” nuclear arsenal. Indeed, the representative of Israel had made fallacious statements while his country refused to submit its nuclear installations to IAEA inspections. He urged the international community to put pressure on Israel to accede to the NPT and rid itself of its nuclear arsenal.
