Social engineering - treat people like criminals, they'll act like it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29023577 Its time to try the reverse. Start treating people with respect. I'd rather have a HO passed out on my front lawn, than to live in a 'planned' community. Hell, I had to put the beat down on my wife one time when looking for a home to buy. She loved the house, the neighborhood, and the community park. I was fine with it too, until I opened a cupboard door that had all the rules posted on a sheet tacked to the inside of the door. Anonymous Coward User ID: 22089462 Netherlands 12/04/2012 08:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Standard Daily Telegraph bullshit. But hey what to expect from scum like Rupert Murdoch. Dutch source; [link to www.trouw.nl] In short, there are people who produce a lot of problems for their neighbors (think loud music at night in an appartmentblock, threatening neighbors etc. etc.), due to how Dutch law works they can't just be kicked out to the street easily. What is proposed is essentially moving them (after several warnings and most likely a lawsuit) to a trailer park for 6 months before they can get back in a public housing unit. As for "minimal services" it's proposed to be near industrial sites and such so you won't live close by to for example supermakets, doctors etc. (keep in mind they will still live in Amsterdam so these services would still be within like 3 to 5 miles max). All in all can't say I disagree with it. |

Miserable people want to drag everyone down with them. "Some men just want to watch the world burn" as they say. |

I just moved from what was considered the best neighborhood in the county. The children could not have basketball goals in the driveway, if you had a bush or tree die you could not replace it with the same variety w/o going before the board, no growing a tomato plant in the back yard, etc. I am now living in a 25 year old community but am free to do whatever the hell I want as long as it is legal...freedom! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 28406998 United States 12/04/2012 09:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ~sigh When will we figure this out...??? (copied from: [link to www.facebook.com] "I was recently told of an African tribe that does the most beautiful thing. When someone does something hurtful and wrong, they take the person to the center of town, and the entire tribe comes and surrounds him. For two days they’ll tell the man every good thing he has ever done. The tribe believes that every human being comes into the world as GOOD, each of us desiring safety, love, peace, happiness. But sometimes in the pursuit of those things people make mistakes. The community sees misdeeds as a cry for help. They band together for the sake of their fellow man to hold him up, to reconnect him with his true Nature, to remind him who he really is, until he fully remembers the truth from which he'd temporarily been disconnected: "I AM GOOD"." If we don't figure this out on our own, we are going to get one hell of a lesson. It will be powerful. Fasten your seat belts! |

MarkinAZ User ID: 20006444 United States 12/04/2012 09:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | While hard for Americans to fathom - much of the housing in Amsterdam is owned by the city and is available on a percentile of income basis to all citizens. Housing is considered a right for all. City owned buildings and tenants paying 20% of their pension or social security/welfare income can be located anywhere - even in the most costly and desirable neighborhoods along the Keizersgracht or Prinzengracht (the Kings Canal and the Princes' Canal respectively - two of the most expensive and ancient areas of the city). Most of these "social housing" tenants that are Dutch have waited years to get an apartment in such an area and they behave like their much wealthier neighbors who are often paying 10 or 20 times per month more rent than the "social housing" tenants are. However, there are problems with various Muslims and Sudanise immigrants who refuse to integrate into or have anything to do with Dutch culture and they behave as if they were still wondering the desert on camels or living in the jungles of the Sudan on the edge of the deserts. These people are often unemployed for generations, do not speak either Netherlands or English (refusing free courses in both) and are often involved in violent crimes, drug dealing, car thefts, burglaries, and more than a few murders on an annual basis. Getting them OUT of the areas when they behave in this way and isolating them is actually a great idea! (I lived in Amsterdam for three years - loved it - and would go back there in a second if I could earn a living there.) They could lower the crime rate in the rest of the city, re-educate the ones who don't want to stay in the "scum" areas, and save the historic buildings and flats from utter destruction of these idiot who don't care and don't bother cleaning their own space - much less the area outdoors around their buildings. As an American Expat living in Amsterdam, we were paying $1600/mo for a 1900 sq ft./ two bedroom, two bath new modern apartment inside of a row house on the Keizersgracht. Our electric and gas and water were included! We paid for phone, cable, and internet service. We had fiber optic TV and Internet years before Verizon rolled out FIOS in LA and NYC. We had two full floors in the building and it even had a Pogenphol kitchen with Miele appliances! It was dirt cheap by LA or NYC standards and our dutch neighbors were shocked that the bank that owned the building could charge such an outrageous price for it. We were thrilled as my tax free housing allowance check was for almost Three Thousand every month (on top of salary) and we were able to bank it for the whole three years we were there. (A common arrangement for US execs moved to an out-of-US-area btw.) I'm told the same apartment is now renting for about 2900 Euro's per month. Or about $3500 dollars. Still not a bad price for the space and the area. The building did have an elevator which is RARE in the older houses that have been converted to apartments. But this one was owned by Fortis Bank and they didn't mind improving to the max to command high rents from expats. The wealthy Dutch wouldn't pay that kind of money for rent - they'd go live in social housing as long as they could and then use their extra income to buy an apartment to rent out to others and make money doing so! (The Dutch are "thrifty" to the point of cheapness- but not in an unkind way. The city literally starved to death for four years during the Nazi occupation and their is always the fear of not having enough food/medicine/necessities - even now two generations or three later. Those scars run deep in the psyche of a nation it seems.) |
