A Russian political analyst with contacts at the Foreign Ministry said that “people sent by the Russian leadership” who had contact with Mr. Assad two weeks ago described a man who has lost all hope of victory or escape.

“His mood is that he will be killed anyway,” Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of a Russian foreign affairs journal and the head of an influential policy group, said in an interview in Moscow, adding that only an “extremely bold” diplomatic proposal could possibly convince Mr. Assad that he could leave power and survive.

“If he will try to go, to leave, to exit, he will be killed by his own people,” Mr. Lukyanov said, speculating that security forces dominated by Mr. Assad’s minority Alawite sect would not let him depart and leave them to face revenge. “If he stays, he will be killed by his opponents. He is in a trap. It is not about Russia or anybody else. It is about his physical survival.”

Russia May Finally Be Willing to Push Assad Out of Syria

Vladimir Putin (who is alive and well!) met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan yesterday and reportedly signaled that Russia may be willing to push for a new plan to peacefully remove Bashar al-Assad from power in Syria. If the rumors turn out to true it would be a major shift in the diplomatic stance of Russia, which has long argued that other nations should not be interfering in Syrian politics and has helped blocked several U.N. Security Council resolutions that would have taken actions against Assad's regime.

CAIRO: Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime is in danger of collapse “anytime” as the opposition gains ground on the military and political fronts, Arab League chief Nabil Al-Arabi said yesterday.

“That could happen anytime,” the secretary general said in an exclusive interview.

“Now they are fighting in Damascus,” and after 20 months of violence, “I think there will be something soon,” he said.

“Facts on the ground indicate very clearly now that the Syrian opposition is gaining, politically and militarily. Every day they are gaining something,” Arabi said.

Lebanese MP Oqab Saqer Admits to Being Involved in Shedding Syrian Blood

LONDON, (SANA) - The Future Movement MP, Oqab Saqer, on Monday admitted to being involved in shedding the Syrian blood and destroying Syria.

After many days of silence, Saqer announced that the audio records published by the Lebanese al-Akhbar newspaper and broadcast by the OTV satellite channel which revealed the details of his phone calls with terrorist groups to supply them with weapons, stoke the situation in Syria and kill the Syrians are "true."

He expressed pride in what he did and is doing which, according to his speech, serves Lebanon's interest in the first place, without explaining what is the interest in destroying a neighboring country and shedding the blood of a brotherly people.

In an interview with the Saudi al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper, Saqer said that he is personally responsible for all his deeds. This statement contradicts a previous statement as he announced in a TV interview that the Future Movement leader Saad al-Hariri knew every step he has taken.

Russia and NATO agree that the Syrian conflict cannot be resolved by armed force, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a statement on Tuesday. The comment comes just before NATO announces whether it will honor Turkey’s request to deploy patriot missiles along its border with Syria. NATO says that any deployment will be for purely defensive purposes and will not support an offensive operation or no-fly zone. A decision from the 28-member alliance is expected later on Tuesday.

Always annoyed when I see quotes like this. Of course the conflict can be resolved by armed force, it's just that nobody has the stomach for it. Not that I blame them - but to say that conflict resolution can not be had by armed force just totally overlooks history.
