The loss of power wouldn't be Armageddon, but how people would respond to it might be. Imagine six months during which power would be very limited, most vehicles wouldn't work, and the majority of electric devices and operating stations would be fried.

If you want to be even more scared, read about how nuclear plants are cooled and shut down, and realize they depend on the grid for their backups as well.

Hardening the grid is a really good idea for both natural and security reasons, as something like the Carrington Event will eventually recur, and this insurance is the difference between it being an inconvenience and a cataclysm.
