It's simple math. Two incomes, one child, and you can have a wonderful life. Vacations around the world, the best schools. The cultural benefits living in a major city can provide. The child can go to a top rated college without fear of debt pilling up while they learn their chosen field.

Same couple, three or four kids and it changes radically. No vacations round the world, no private schools, no extra money for cultural events. Lucky if you can afford music lessons for one kid or art lessons for another. You live in a larger home but at least 100 miles out of any major cultural center and maybe further. Your whole lives ratchet down several steps, and the expenditure of time and money ratchet upward as you add in more children. You cannot open the same doors and provide the same experiences to four kids that you can give to one child. When it is all said and done - most parents opt for one or two children and stop there. Anything beyond a third child can push you from upper middle class toward poverty today. I just wrote the check for my daughters first year of her Masters Program tuition and books. The total at UCSF? About sixty-three thousand dollars. It's worth every dime to know she won't be saddled with horrendous debt when she graduates and is forced to spend the first ten years of her career paying off student loans she cannot afford to pay on and still live a decent life. What good is earning 100k per year if you are giving 40 of it in taxes and another 24k per year in loan payments to pay for the education? Doesn't leave much to live on and it goes on for a very long time. I would rather make the sacrifice and buy her freedom from debt and bondage of payig interest on those loans for decades to come. Now I just have to hope Ive timed it right and I die before my savings and investments run out at about age 82 or 83.

This is a generalization. It is about making choices. I am a single mother of 4. I support them alone and they have traveled throughout the USA, Central and South America. I have no interest in Europe, but we are considering Africa in a year or so.

The kids speak English and Spanish fluently and have had years of dance and Chinese lessons. I don't make a ton of money and I don't have any inheritance. I make good decisions- no smoking, drinking, or wasting. And, I save money well. It is about priorities. If one WANTS to do it, they can.

I have more than the average. Depends on where you live I guess. It's a part of wealth preservation however in deciding to have fewer children. Look at Europe, Japan, etc. for confirmation. Most populations in 1st world countries aggregately are stabile to declining. Quality of life factors in, along with access to health facilities, and contraception. Historically larger number of offspring were a necessity as many offspring died during childhood due to disease. Additionally, large families were needed as tasks were labor intensive and farms required many hands to bring in a harvest.

The problem becomes when you have society based upon the premise of retirement entitlements that require a larger base of younger workers to help pay in to the system to take care of those that have reached the age of retirement. If this balance is upset, then there are no funds to pay for the entitlements for future generations. The pot begins to shrink, and at some point becomes unsustainable. This scenario has already begun playing out both in Japan and Europe. It is beginning in earnest here in the United States. Vast improvements in healthcare has stretched the average age of death to numbers that were never accounted for when social security was set up. Something has to give at some point.

The solution is easy, have more children. However with the number of finite resources on this planet, you run into a whole other issue.

Sorry to burst your bubble but our oldest son has 5 kids. His partner is white, he is white, both are blonde with blue eyes.. So, yes there are couples out there with more than 1 kid... Not the majority by any stretch, I will give you that, but there are still people who love children and have large families.

Look, I know this may sound cold but just because you see any kids running around today does not automatically mean they will survive. A good pandemic could wipe out a large chunk of kids of any race and mix in dwindling food supplies and natural disasters and you could have dead kids right and left. Everyone just assumes that "whites will go extinct" or "this group will out populate this group to become the new majority". The assumption is that something terrible, or numerous terrible things, won't happen which causes a huge reduction in overall population. If people in crowded urban environments have 6 kids each but a combination of disease and lack of resources causes half or more of these kids to die prematurely, it doesn't matter how many puppies a lady can pop out.

Whether a natural mutation or some man made nightmare (weaponized bird flu, etc.) there is absolutely no reason to assume that anybody's litter of offspring will survive to adulthood. I'm sorry but this is just fact. Especially in the crowded urban areas where disease can spread like wildfire between humans.

That's one reason people used to have many kids, to increase the expected number of survivors. If you have just 1 or 2 and lavish a lot of attention and money on them, but then they are wiped out, you'll wish you had gone for sheer numbers.
