Burt Gummer User ID: 7702124 United States 12/04/2012 09:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll make it easier for you..... How many drives in the server? 6 drives. OK...then its probably a RAID-0 setup.....or a RAID 5 with hot spare. Look at the drives array box and see if any fault lights are blinking next to any of the drives. Some have a yellow light. What do you see?? Last Edited by Useless Cookie Eater on 12/04/2012 09:58 AM |

K will have to get back to you on this, have to run to the site and check the actual computer. Raid error is showing up as a message on a satellite computer I use to run the softwear that runs the system. BRB. |

Burt Gummer User ID: 7702124 United States 12/04/2012 10:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I see a flashing yellow and a stagnant orange light. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 628775 No green to be found. OK....flashing yellow is usually the bad drive. (depends on manufacturer) All the others should have steady lights...is that the case?? Anonymous Coward User ID: 14663435 United States 12/04/2012 10:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just what Burt said, if you have a raid error there will probably be a bad drive in there somewhere. Hopefully they are external hot swap drives so you should be able to see a red light (probably) on one of the drives to indicate it's bad. You need to replace any bad drives. Should be a software management application on the server. Like Adaptec or LSI, if you can open that it should be able to show you also. Otherwise it might be a software based raid through windows. ****You want to get a backup of important data before it get's worse or doing anything if you are not familar with the process. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 628775 No green to be found. OK....flashing yellow is usually the bad drive. All the others should have steady lights...is that the case?? Yes OK.....you have ONE dead drive in the array then. You SHOULD be able to still work right now....but at a slower read/write speed. ....but that drive must be replaced ASAP. If another one fails.....you are screwed and could have data loss...how much and what depends totally on if the drives are striped, parity, or mirrored sets. Bottom line...call a tech....replace the drive now. If it were me I would not work on that server too much until you replace it. I would also suggest upgrading all the drives after this is fixed since they are ALL just as old as the one that failed. Last Edited by Useless Cookie Eater on 12/04/2012 10:13 AM |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 628775 Canada 12/04/2012 10:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Have a backup in place, don't know how to address this mess. Was told by the people that sold us the equip that it is not a problem, but my it guy said it is a huge problem. The system is complicated and diverts to more than one computer. This computer runs a parking facility that houses some vip. If it goes down and they get locked in, there will be hell to pay and I will end up one very stressed out gal. Thanks for all the advice. What type of computer geek do I need to call to rectify the situation? |

My IT guy that works on my office stuff does not want to touch this system, any advice on how to contact a good IT person and what I should look for. |

What type of computer geek do I need to call to rectify the situation? Someone like me. lol (someone who knows networks and server infrastructure) If I was closer I'd come out to your location but I only service the NYC, NJ and CT areas. What needs to be done... 1) That drive must be replaced by a new one..ASAP! 2) Server is overdue for an OVERHAUL of the drive array. All drives should be upgraded/ replaced after this problem is fixed if that is a mission critical server...and it clearly is. Last Edited by Useless Cookie Eater on 12/04/2012 10:19 AM |

Maybe pull the drive and plug it back in to rebuild? That other solid amber is confusing though. Shouldn't they be all green except for the failure? |
