Anonymous Coward User ID: 1549626 United States 12/04/2012 03:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You and I have a difference of opinion on this subject. I think you'd be making a mistake to so quickly discount mine. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28969583 1) I absolutely agree that Kurzweil is brilliant, and has, as you correctly state, predicted every major IT movement in the last 40 years. My reference to him as a "nutjob" has to do with his vehemently transhumanist agenda, which holds the merging of man and computer as the most-preferred archetype. In Kurzweil's view, the merging of man and machine can only improve humanity, rendering it superior to the humanity we have now. I disagree, strongly. 2) So the Singularity is a given? How are you so sure? No possibility the Singularity is Kurzweil's "bridge too far"? The man can never be wrong? Interesting. He'd be the first. 3) Whether your knowledge of software architecture outstrips my own might be an interesting conversation at some point, and your points about algorithm development and man-machine interfacing are well taken. But actually reaching the Singularity is, to me, a difference in kind, not degree. To believe the Singularity is inevitable, you have to be willing to discount the spiritual nature of humanity. I'm not willing to do that. Kurzweil is. 4) When a computer, any computer, passes the Turing test, call me. 5) If you're referring to Deus Ex Machina, I again think you're misunderstanding my argument. By using the phrase "human advancement", you clearly agree with Kurzweil that humanity needs computer assistance to reach its true potential and is flawed in its current form. Humanity's flaws stem from the heavy hand of our current overlords, not any inherent failing. That's my take, anyway. Fair enough. 1) OK. 2) Yes. The Singularity is inevitable unless we become extinct first. When and how it happens are the only questions. 3) It's a difference of degree, like the temperature of a hydrogen atom before it fuses. 1 degree cooler, you have a balloon. 1 degree hotter, you have a fusion warhead. 4) Coming any time now. 5) Deus Ex, yes, typo I fixed. I don't say that computer assistance to reach its true potential. It is, however, the most likely route that is under our physical and intellectual control here in the second decade of the 21st century. It is the purely rational, mechanistic best approach. Whether or not pure rationality and mechanistic existence is philosophically ideal is a totally separate issue. Kurzweil, working under the assumption that is, is working toward accommodating it as the framework for human advancement. Good response mate, keep it up. Oddly enough I have always thought the singularity or even true turing level artificial intelligence was always an end-time marker. I can't tell exactly weather your a theist of any sort but I have always thought The "Tower of Babel" gave some hint of what was to come. The interpretation of which depends on how literally you take your biblical text. Note the Bable story falls in Genesis 11 which I am sure has some significance for our Gematria experts. To quote: "5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other. 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth." Note here the Lord didn't make them dumb. He didn't make them lame and unable to build. He didn't remove the knowledge of building. He directly effected Communication. It was Language/Communication between each other that made is so that "nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them". Where I think Kurzweil gets it a little wrong, is the impact of eradicating spoken language, not necessarily the merger of man and machine. Language is currently a phenomenally slow means of communication. When and if we start connecting neurons at light speed it won't be the access to computing resources that causes a "Singularity" (defined as technology accelerating so rapidly we can hardly track it anymore) it will be un-throttled human inter-communication that causes it. In me ever so extrapolating opinion. |

Guess what, Ray? AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. Yes, you were right to predict decades ago that eventually a computer would be powerful enough to beat all human chess players, but chess can be boiled down to pure mathematics. There is simply no way for any machine to mimic the astonishing intricacy and beautiful nonlinearity of the human mind. We are eternal, cosmic beings, Ray. Based on this date, the final timewave cycle would end in MID-NOVEMBER of 2012 (Nov 16th, iirc). Quoting: Carshy McCarsh Thread: WTF!!! is happening with Sun right now check this image from NASA Agreed. And I certainly hope it's SOON. Look at the universe from a top down perspective rather than a bottom up. If you were God, you would offer freewill, but you'd not waste your time making commandments or laws. You have complete power over everything within the universe, and the ability to be everywhere at once, and within each living being, all at once, preventing complete and total destruction, while also guiding your creation to create everything while you just watch. The true nature of a kind, good God is that. The God spoken of by most mainstream religions is a humanization and perversion of the concept, driven by ego and a need to be acknowledged and worshiped, despite offering very little to no proof of existence. Your God wants us to advance on our own, because we are it's entertainment. And secondly, about the AI part, AI is pretty damn simple in concept. It's abstract programming. Allowing an electrical charge to go wherever it wants, based on the most simple route determined by the charge. Our Brains are nothing more than exceedingly over-complex biological machines reacting to the input of all senses combined while running thousands of biological processes to keep our entire system alive and moving. Programming will NEVER lead to machine consciousness, because it's digital. It will lead to highly advanced AI however that is nearly indistinguishable. You would need an analog neural net, and all you'd need to do is wire it correctly and set it in motion with an initial charge, keep the power running, and it will eventually organize itself intelligently. Once this has been done, it's like a newborn child. It knows nothing. It'll have to learn to interface with reality in whatever way you've given it the physical ability to do. Intelligence isn't rare at all imo, or unique. More than likely it's just an eventual outcome of all random electromagnetic patterns self organizing to act within some type of rhythm. Stop thinking with your ego. We are not unique snowflakes. |
