What OP is talking about with about the immeasurable technological advancements in a decade is a FUCKING fact called Moore's Law. Y'all mothafuckas need to do some reading.

Kurzweil is no doubt brilliant, but he's also a nutjob who longs for the "singularity", the point where human consciousness becomes one with computer tech. Guess what, Ray? AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. Yes, you were right to predict decades ago that eventually a computer would be powerful enough to beat all human chess players, but chess can be boiled down to pure mathematics. There is simply no way for any machine to mimic the astonishing intricacy and beautiful nonlinearity of the human mind. We are eternal, cosmic beings, Ray. Please wake the fuck up and figure that out, before you start trying to eat microchips and shit silicon.

You are so obviously wrong, I don't even know where to start.
 Quoting: Carshy McCarsh

No, the poster is right. The only way this computer could mildly pose a threat is if it developed consciousness. There is no way to be certain that the technology will be available for this to happen, for the conditions to be present. Even if this machine developed rudimentary consciousness it may only be as 'smart' as an amoeba for the first while, at best. There is no way to tell how similar or different from human consciousness that would be.

No matter how complex and capable Skynet may be of predicting what products we feel like buying based on doing a whole buncha math and number-crunching, it cant predict how we will react from moment to moment based on free will and emotion.

Im not Japanese you idiot I simply live here.

It would seem the OP is simply not able to cope with people disagreeing intelligently with his ideas. The mark of a childish idiot. OP has created a thread which he thinks is of marked importance and dissident opinions are not welcome in his playpen.

Also, OP, you clearly have no background knowledge and have done no reading on the nature of consciousness as put forth by the minds on the forefront of that area of research. You are simply a sci-fi fan boy waiting for people like Kurzwell to give your life more meaning via the next generation of suppository iPhones.

On the other hand, speaking in a biological context, our minds work the same as a binary system. It's not impossible that one day (not in any of our lifetimes), everything in this reality will come down to having an understanding of 99.99% or greater predictability. "This", whatever it is, may just be a complicated machine far beyond anything we can understand with our egos in the way. Only those that can let go of a belief that we are divine beings will get to understand the big picture and, in turn, purpose.
 Quoting: Brian Moser

Definitely an intriguing question, and one I've wrestled with. An interesting analogy: I became an audiophile at a young age, and have delved deeply into circuit design of power amplifiers, especially those built around the seemingly-anachronistic vacuum tube, and, more recently, I've written D/A (digital to analog) decoding software. What I've come to learn is that digital systems, while capable of many things and improving materially and at a rapid rate, can never equal their legacy, analog counterparts in the reproduction of music. There's always something missing. That ineffable quality of real, flesh and blood humans playing real instruments in front of you always goes missing when you replace the vacuum tubes with transistors and your source is a CD player or D/A converter at the business end of the most tweaked PC imaginable running the highest-rez digital files available. The best analog turntable systems still show a clean pair of heels to the best digital playback system available. That flies in the face of accepted logic nowadays, and those who find satisfaction in listening to MP3 files will no doubt think the argument I'm making a nonsensical one not worth a second of their time. So be it. In my experience, the best digital systems are merely an approximation of the best analog systems, to say nothing of the original event. Although they continue to improve, using analog devices always gets you closer to the reality you're trying to imitate. Food for thought when we're theorizing about the possibility of digital systems someday replicating human thought patterns.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28969583

Good analogy. I guess my logic is based more on a hypothetical school of thought.

We assume certain things to be true, one of which being our definitions between biological intelligence and digital intelligence. We assume that we are the creators of a binary code to use in programming computers, but, and I realize this is a stretch, can it be proven that the opposite isn't feasible?

Everything is numerical and follows patterns. Sometimes the patterns are too extensive for us to realize but ultimately, who's to say we aren't merely (what we now define as) AI? It would seem to me that looking at emotions from a structured point of view, we make mistakes because it creates doubt that we are perfect and therefore, we have reason to believe that free will does exist. We can intentionally make bad choices based on our mood at the time as well as "feel" regret - a mechanism to prevent the same mistake again.

As imperfect beings, we consider ourselves to be more than just a series of fundamental IF\THEN\ELSE code. To make AI meet our standards for being authentically intelligent, wouldn't we draw the line at saying that the conditions to make mistakes would have to be unpredictable yet fodder for the creation to have insight as to why it made said mistakes? I guess, really, the question isn't about defining consciousness but rather, defining chaos.

Side note - have you ever seen the movie Memento?

let them build it, He will come.

they seek to set themselves in a position that is already given to another, in their ongoing quest to be "as the Father is" in their own regard

it would behoove each of us to remember that the bottom line has little of nothing to do what these would do, or have us do in the interim

these are the dead struggling to make themselves valid within this world, before it is snatched asunder from their cold dead hands in the final hour

; )

singularity is all well and fine, and melding humans with technology will happen no doubt. soon we can search google with our minds and have in-vision navi, nanomachines patrolling our bloodstreams and retinal scanning devices everywhere, thats fine.

you are talking about a standalone computer being smarter than a human. im saying this wont happen unless it develops consciousness. would you care to comment on that? unless the computer becomes a vessel of consciousness (not just self-aware) its just a really, really big calculator.

Whilst I do not doubt the fact that computing and biology could work well together I doubt that AI will ever reach true complexities of the human brain and mind, two fundamental areas that will never be achieved...

Add to this the concept of the soul, the five senses and the intricacies of a human body, we can rest assured that the notion of a living, breathing AI construct is and will remain in the realms of ideas and nothing more

What you are refering to OP is nothing more than a data mining tool, a hugemongous difference.

ive had a good read. ok, i skipped the heavy techy stuff and what just looks like nerdy thigh-rubbing, but i have read the ayes and the no's

for all the amazing capabilities (that us plebs couldnt possibly comprehend) machines apparently possess, AI will NEVER beat flesh and bone

we are too nuanced, too finely tuned, too fallible and too discerning. he decisions we make all day, every day are HUMAN decisions. we have a conscience, we have love, we have hate

computers just add up. do big sums, essentially

we have those social skills that nerds lack and think arent necessary anyway. we sense the kind of atmosphere cant cant be measured by instrumentation

essentially AI will only be brilliant at "artificial" intelligence. thats the key word

doesnt matter how hard the boffins get for singularity, theyre dreaming, literally

humans "need" AI? no, some humans want to live forever, cant accept that THIS IS IT

seems some people need to believe in a shiny future like some people need to believe in god

keep wet dreaming of those empty plastic japanese girls tho! they cant hurt you

As much as I would like to agree with you it doesn't have to mimic but simply invent a new way that works for itself. Yes it's true that math can be the the decider on games of chess based on probabilities and yes a (binary) computer will never match the intricacy of what we know is human but it does have the potential to discover it's own destiny. A self aware machine based on the laws of man that may decide to create it's own God, rules or Commandments.

Machines will either rule the world or we will become merged with machines. The problem with becoming a machine it that someone had access to the shut down, turn off or reboot key.

Different topic, but I sometimes wonder if there will be such as a thing as biological personalty or intellectual implants. If there was such a thing as intellectual inplants we could all become scientists, engineers and so on. No need for higher education, just an operation

you are talking about a standalone computer being smarter than a human. im saying this wont happen unless it develops consciousness. would you care to comment on that? unless the computer becomes a vessel of consciousness (not just self-aware) its just a really, really big calculator.

I never used the term "stand alone computer". That is your bias showing.

At what level of education would you like me to address you in terms of computer science, AI, and cognitive science?

I'll put the answers in terms familiar to you without having to educate beforehand.

Once you apologize for your rude outburst, that is.

Im not being rude.

It doesnt matter if you used the term or not, what you are talking about is AI (a computer) being smarter than a human.

So it can think like a human brain, big deal. Monkey mimicry.

A human brain is not the only source of a human's intelligence.

For a dumbed down commercialized society only interested in shopping... sure this thing may appear smart but it will never be as intelligent as a human until its technological (physical) constraints are opened widely enough such that rudimentary consciousness can take seed.
