Machines will either rule the world or we will become merged with machines. The problem with becoming a machine it that someone had access to the shut down, turn off or reboot key.

No, the poster is right. The only way this computer could mildly pose a threat is if it developed consciousness. There is no way to be certain that the technology will be available for this to happen, for the conditions to be present. Even if this machine developed rudimentary consciousness it may only be as 'smart' as an amoeba for the first while, at best. There is no way to tell how similar or different from human consciousness that would be.

No matter how complex and capable Skynet may be of predicting what products we feel like buying based on doing a whole buncha math and number-crunching, it cant predict how we will react from moment to moment based on free will and emotion.

Kurzweil is no doubt brilliant, but he's also a nutjob who longs for the "singularity", the point where human consciousness becomes one with computer tech. Guess what, Ray? AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. Yes, you were right to predict decades ago that eventually a computer would be powerful enough to beat all human chess players, but chess can be boiled down to pure mathematics. There is simply no way for any machine to mimic the astonishing intricacy and beautiful nonlinearity of the human mind. We are eternal, cosmic beings, Ray. Please wake the fuck up and figure that out, before you start trying to eat microchips and shit silicon.

40 some years ago a friend of mine who is a scientist showed me a room full of computer hardware - it was a LARGE room. He then proceeded to tell me that soon all that would fit into the size of a matchbox.
