Antipsychotic Drug Used for Chemo’s Nausea: Mother Grieves Son’s Death
In the town of Falkirk, Scotland, a mother is grieving for the loss of her son, a young man whose life was cut short by a drug given to him for nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. But she’s also traumatized by the lack of closure caused by a grotesquely cruel health system that refuses to admit it.

James Buchanan passed away last year at the age of 23. He had testicular cancer, but did not die of it. His death certificate listed cancer as the secondary cause of death, not the primary one. His mother, Jane Buchanan, says, “I don’t have closure and feel no one’s taking responsibility.”

The cause of his death goes unacknowledged by anyone or any official involved. There can be little doubt, though, that the drug metoclopramide, which was given to him to combat nausea resulting from chemotherapy, is the cause. However, neither James nor his family was given any warning of that potential outcome. And that’s the problem—lack of informed consent.

This off marketing of use of drugs is madness and killing people and now it seems big pharma once again has the backing of the law to do what it wants.

Ruling Is Victory for Drug Companies in Promoting Medicine for Other Uses

In a case that could have broad ramifications for the pharmaceutical industry, a federal appeals court on Monday threw out the conviction of a sales representative who sold a drug for uses not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The judges said that the ban on so-called off-label marketing violated the representative’s freedom of speech.

The 2-to-1 decision by a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Manhattan addresses a long-running and costly issue for the industry, which has paid billions of dollars in penalties to the federal government in recent years after being accused of marketing blockbuster drugs for off-label uses.

In July, for example, the British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline agreed to pay $3 billion in fines, in part for promoting antidepressants and other drugs for unapproved uses; a month later, Johnson & Johnson announced that its pharmaceutical unit had reached a $181 million consumer fraud settlement with 36 states and the District of Columbia over its marketing of Risperdal, an antipsychotic drug.

That is such a sad story!!!! I wish the healthcare system wasn't so corrupt.

"Happiness consumes itself like a flame. It cannot burn for ever, it must go out, and the presentiment of its end destroys it at its very peak."

Re: Antipsychotic Drug Used for Chemo’s Nausea: Mother Grieves Son’s Death
Metoclopramide is an antiemetic drug, not an anti-psychotic (AP) one. I'd say that using it as an AP is off-label rather than using it for nausea which is its intended purpose.
Why is this gaia site saying the opposite?

It's an absolute tragedy that such a young man should die from the side-effects of a drug given to help him but to try to suggest it's because of a specific drug was used "off-label" is pure lies.
