If anyone has ever taken the subway in NYC you know what a unpleasant experience it is.

I just imagine that poor victim trying to live his life, commuting like cattle every day and trying to provide for your kids. Add all the normal stresses and then the menancing black guy harraassing everyone because he can and you ask him to stop and he throws you unto the tracks....

It was around noon time in Times Square, probably quite a few of the spectators (who ran the other way rather than trying to help) were tourists. Still this doesn't speak well of New Yorkers.

I used to work very close to where this happened.

I am shocked that nobody had the presence of mind to lay down on the floor, feet away from the tracks, and offer hands to help the guy up. I thought at least a couple people would have an instinct for lifesaving. No I am not a professional first responder, though I did take a course to qualify as a Red Cross lifeguard (for swimmers).

They ran the other way! Maybe I don't know this country any more, the place where I was born.

Some people can't react in a situation like this. Consider taking the subway everyday and having to put up with all the menancing people around and try to make it to your job without getting harrassed, pushed, touched or aggressively bothered by all the freaks. Most people have tuned so out and are so affraid to get into a confrontation - they become like cattle. This poor guy pushed onto the platform actually told that horrible black menance to stop bothering people and he was thrown in front of a train for it. nyc is a hell hole.

Good point, normal people are traumatized already and they often aren't made of heroic material. I've done foolish heroic things before and almost gotten in real trouble(and I am an average dude, no super gym muscle guy or anything), and you do start thinking twice about getting in certain business of other people. But I must say without a doubt that I would have lifted that man up and saved his life. And if the black menace was still around I would have first pushed HIM into the tracks.

In the late 90s, early oughts I had a contract assignment in Manhattan and I worked and lived there for 6-9 months. I can not tell you how lad I was when it was finished and I could go home to New Hampshire. At first it was fun as I had never spent any length of time there but trust me it didnt take long for the novelty to wear off

Btw why aren't there emergency alarms that communicate to the train driver so that people can activate when such thing occurs?

Actually I normally would like to say something bad about the photographer but it if it was me I would be leary of getting to close to a panicked man that is almost too low to help I mean, if he is panicked about dying (and you know he is)he might grab you and try to crawl up hard and pull you in.

Kind of what lifeguards deal with when they get close to panicked drowning victims. They can get climbed on and killed by trying to help.

What ii want to know is why the fuck are there not at least some toe holds and handles on that wall to help someone climb out on their own?! They would only have to drill some in, like what mountain climbers chizel into the walls of rocks.
Might take all of one work shift with an electric jack hammer to put some toe holds in that wall to complete one subway stop.
