You can say whatever you like, look down on me, consider me a lower form of life than yourself, whatever. I am a newly single mother of three...again. My husband walked out on us a couple of months ago. Yes, I applied for food stamps. I also found a job, as I have been a stay at home mom...I'm thanking God that there is assistance available. Sometimes in life, the unexpected happens...and I am taking the steps I need to take to provide for my family. I am not sitting on my ass crying about my situation. So, kiss my ass, babe. Be careful about making judgments, anything can happen to anyone at anytime. You are not so special that you're excluded. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1015670 It creates high-tech jobs here, gets spent here, and we learn things about our universe at a ridiculously low cost, overall. It's about discovery, and we don't know precisely what we'll discover. After all, the electron originally was such a discovery, and was largely considered useless by the pundits of the time. Yet now, look around you: a whole world of electronics. The money for space exploration gets spent right here on Earth. Money we dont have or need to spend. D-fund |

If you do the math it cost every american just barely over ONE DOLLAR in a year. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1510193 Should be complaining about he tons of money that gets wasted on so called drug trafficking. People like the OP are ignorant because they don't even know what NASA has done for technology that doesn't even have anything to really do with space. bitch please I know more about NASA than you think I do a NASA center operates not far from me... I've seen our tax dollars at work... Can you honestly tell me what the fuck sending a new mars rover will accomplish? nothing... more shitty photoshoped photos of the arizona desert! If you think it's shitty photoshopped photos of the Arizona desert, then you don't know half of what you think you do about NASA. NASA's Mars exploration missions have been incredibly successful. Even forgetting for a second all that we've learned about Mars in the last couple of decades as a result, we've gone from barely being able to get a probe to orbit mars successfully, to having a working sky-crane system for lowering massive payloads onto the surface. That kind of technological advancement is going to be universally useful in the future. Let's say that in a few years time we find an asteroid that's on a collision course for earth. Do you want a space program that is still actively engaged in designing more and more complex missions to explore other planets for a tiny fraction of the federal budget, or do you want a space program that is limited to putting up weather and GPS satellites at best? |

It's all useful. It all aids in our understanding of the solar system and how to negotiate it. We need an active and vibrant space program for our long term survival. In the process of "studying soil samples and taking pictures of rocks" we develop the technologies we'll one day need for a deflection mission, but the deflection mission itself will need to be designed specifically to whatever the profile of the threat is. Let's say for example that we do go ahead and complete the development of the Space Launch System and redevelop our ability to launch humans beyond earth orbit. Should we arbitrarily restrict ourselves to only studying near earth asteroids because some don't understand the benefit of studying anything else? Or should we use the rocket for general exploration and develop a broader understanding of the solar system while we're at it, and then if a need arises to use it for a deflection mission we already have it? |

And we know why we don't see small asteroids until they're on top of us; they're very small and dim and only become bright enough to detect when they're relative close by. This is why we have new projects like Pan-STARRS to try to detect as many as possible by covering the entire sky as quickly as possible, repeatedly every night. We WILL only detect the smaller near earth asteroids, including ones that can cause damage but not necessary total destruction, when they're close by, but the goal is to catch them on an earlier close approach, years before an impact. The goal is to be able to find them at the earliest opportunity. Last Edited by Astromut on 12/05/2012 12:51 AM |

Even smaller asteroids than 2012 DA14 were detected years in advance. I don't quite understand what happened. In my totally unprofessional opinion, I believe something is preventing us from seeing them until they're right on top of us now. Seems to be that the scientists are left scratching their heads over some of them. That's just my thought, though. I don't have one shred of scientific evidence to back it up, but I have a feeling that something is interfering with our ability to detect them...Maybe that cloud of crap we are entering? I dunno.
