I couldn't tell you why they said the 22nd, but I think that adequately shows that it wasn't exactly unknown then.

Is it not safe to assume that the writers of a show with the subject matter covered in the X-Files would be part of the .05%, or at least aware of what they're talking about?

exactly I knew about it in the mid 90's and I was a total novice conspiracy theorist. still am.

the date is just now at the mcdonald's level of consciousness where they will serve Chitzen Icha mcnuggets down in the pyramids of the mayans and Sting will hold a benefit concert.

I remember watching the x-files in the 90's and knowing they were writing 'faction' based on the pop culture of the conspiracy theorists and I was a teenager.

FYI, the whole mayan calendar theory has been around since at least the '70s, I used to watch the T.V. show "In Search Of" with Leonard Nimoy, it was about doomsday theories, it ran about '77 or '78 I think, I'm sure you can find it in someones archives, it did have the date 21/DEC/12.

If you are familiar with the show and I'm judging from the posts here that many of you are not, you would know that the writers do a lot of research whether it be fringe science, the paranormal, cryptids, etc. Books and a few TV shows about the Mayan "end date" have been around since the late 70's. Legitimate reports, personal accounts, and even fairy tales were a few of the many sources that the writers called upon and anything 2012 related was probably used.

Not a "shill" statement, but a plausible reason for this.

Not saying any different, but you have to admit, it is interesting.
