US Gov Draft? Our 19 yr old son just got a letter from the Fed Gov 'Selective Service System'

I did it 12 years ago this is normal. And yes its for a draft but I havent been drafted yet.

Eh... Technically the entire Male population between 17 and 40 is a Government Militia. This is know as the Reserve Militia.. This was a on the books since the Militia Act of 1903

On March 29, 1975, President Ford signed Proclamation 4360, Terminating Registration Procedures Under Military Selective Service Act, eliminating the registration requirement for all 18–25 year old male citizens.

On July 2, 1980, however, President Carter signed Proclamation 4771, Registration Under the Military Selective Service Act, retroactively re-establishing the Selective Service registration requirement for all 18–26 year old male citizens born on or after January 1, 1960. Only men born between March 29, 1957, and December 31, 1959, were completely exempt from Selective Service registration.

The first registrations after Proclamation 4771 took place on Monday, July 21, 1980, for those men born in January, February and March 1960 at U.S. Post Offices. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays were reserved for men born in the later quarters of the year, and registration for men born in 1961 began the following week.

Probably because the only newspaper I ever read back in the early 80's was called "The Spotlight" and I never got a draft letter as they didn't draft women

No it is not. You must sign up. Back 20 years ago i got the same type of letter, except we had to go to the post office for the sign up slip.

The gov. actually will pursue charges on anyone, without monies, whom doesn't sign.

OP, get him in full time school ASAP, in the 1960's they gave a waiver of up to 7 years if in school, did that

I said this before so I'll say it again, they make you register at 18 because by 30 most have become conscientious objectors. they gotta get 'em young.
