The reason one should care relates to the fact that they consider us subjects rather than citizens and are in the process of transforming our country to reflect that belief. Citizens have rights, subjects do not, irrelevant of whether you have done anything "wrong". Once you are legally a subject you become their property, subject to their caprice and may be disposed of as they sit fit, your inoffensive behavior notwithstanding.
