I had pone of those giant 60 inch big screens that was about 20 years old. A big pain in the rear with a broken tube. I dragged it out front and left a sign free to anyone, and before the end of the day that thing was gone.

Wait. Was the bike in a dumpster, on the side of the road next to garbage cans or what? How do you know the bike was garbage and not just a kids who would be back for it?

Freecycle is a great source for people wanting to get rid of stuff, and people looking for free stuff.

If you don't want it, and don't want to sell it, donate it to charity, give it away to a friend or neighbor, or list it on freecycle.

You should have been looking in "Chapter 398 - GARBAGE, RUBBISH AND REFUSE" [link to ecode360.com] where there is no mention of penalties of going through garbage.

The fact is, once you put your garbage in public domain for collection it becomes just that, public. If this bike was in a trash can on someone's privately owned property then yes, it would be considered stealing. But if it were on the sidewalk, it was free game.

The statement above applies to household, curbside garbage. Now if it was in a dumpster on private property it would be illegal.

I personally wouldn't go through someone's garbage but it is still not illegal if left in public domain.

Of course it should be illegal to pick garbage. Lets say a kid is playing in the trash and you dont see him. You go to grab your prized piece of trash and wind up fondling private area on the kid. Now you are a pedophile. Once a garbage picker, now a kid toucher. Happy with yourself now?

If so, that's fine. I've personally shoved a false traffic stop up an unreasonable cops ass, how? Well, Luckily my girlfriend was recording a video of the new hiking trail next to the road that was recently built. During the video we got pulled over and the cop tells me I didnt stop, at TWO stop signs.

I simply turned to him and said is that so? Looked at my girlfriend and asked "are you still recording?" She of course said yes. I looked back at the cop, and simply told him that we had been recording everything up to that event and that we have proof we only went through ONE stop sign, and that we DID stop at that stop sign. What happened? He didn't say ONE word. Got in his cruiser and left.

Since then, if I am a camera-tard so be it. Saved my ass from paying a couple hundred in a false fine.

Once trash is placed on the curb,it no longer belongs to you. That is why Law Enforcement can easily gather private information. ANYONE can dig through your trash.

You know, a year ago my sister put a small bag of trash in a dumpster located in the parking area of a small apartment complex. They got her liscense plate on camera, called the police and she was sent a citation.

She is still mad to this day and I can't tolerate it. She was too cheap to pay for her trash pick up...not too poor, so she would impose herself on people who pay for trash pick up by sneaking her trash in their dumpsters. She makes the claim it's just a small bag in a big dumpster.

The point here is that it is a stupid little thing but it's more about my sister's mentality that it's "no big deal". I think people that don't agree that it was ok to take this bike out of the trash are tired of the mentality of people who will do this in the first place - a mentality like that of my sister.

Have you ever looked out onto your curb and found a person picking through your trash? I feel violated when I see this. If I have an item that I feel may be still somewhat useful, I put it on the curb the day before trash pickup and put a free sign on it. Never have I had an item there for more than an hour. Never has any of these people knocked on my door to say thanks. It's the mentality of the trash pickers that upset people - a big attitude, like this guy who took the bike.

Unbelievable that they would do that but it does not surprise me at all.
In the 1980's I build myself a cabin 20' X 20' with materials mostly from the local dump and I saw on google maps it is still standing today. I had to buy the stumps and some bearers but the rest was from the dump. At that time a lot of city people were buying up properties and building new houses so truckloads ended at the dump. Windows, quality flooring, doors, woodstoves, roofing iron,
insulation off cuts.
I also found a motorcycle that still had the key in the ignition and it started when I kicked it over.
The best haul was when I saw a friend unloading his large tandem trailer that was loaded with cardboard boxes. I had taken some used fencing wire to the dump and so I talked with him and helped him unload his trailer. When he left I filled my trailer with the boxes he had left which was out of date canned food that I gave most to an old man who was a friend up the road from me. Every time I visited him he thanked me for the canned veges and they lasted him for months.

A person that pulls a bike from the trash should be awarded for not having that bike in the land fill.

Thank you absolutely my thoughts on this too! People garbage pick all the time especially here in Chicago, they drive trucks and pick up tons of trash and why do you even care if you threw it out. Since when is it illegal to take someone's garbage I always believed that the law was once it is placed in trash it's free for the taking. I don't garbage pick unless like the poster I'm replying to I see something I want. Damn some of you people are assholes and OP good luck I hope you get out of this :)

It really shows a lot about a persons character when they won't let people have the TRASH THEY ARE THROWING AWAY.

The sad thing is, I'm sure a lot of people who wouldnt even let someone take their GARBAGE also claim to be christians. Can you see the irony in that?

When I went to college, there was about 4 different apartment complexes right NEXT to the college. These apartment complexes housed a LOT of college students, along with other people as well.

It was common for us, and many others, to go to the apartment dumpster and find stuff we wanted. We found furniture, TVs, posters, stuff that often time worked, but might have not been in the BEST shape, etc.




If I saw someone digging through my garbage, I would have NO problem with it. All I would want is for them to not make a mess.


Honestly, I wouldn't even want to KNOW a person in real life that has a stick so far up their ass, they can't even give away the shit they THROW away.

I know it does not belong to me when I put it by the curb. Was asking if it was illegal for anyone to go through it.....Seems some places it is :)
