maybe because the salvation army goes through the trash and resells it, and you are taking money from them trashpickers they hire to go through it at the waste site.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25567776

LOL. You are fucking retarded. The Salvation Army is not an actual army of trashpickers paid to sort through trash at the dump. Fuck you are stupid.

as usual glp is full of shit. the city recycles the stuff and sells it which is exactly what the pickers do. what is the difference? glp is racist.

the reason its illegal is because the city loses money

All depends.
If its on my property then its mine and only I decide if and what I want someone to pick if anything. There is a deal with garbage company where you specify how they pick it from you. When they come its their property from that moment.

Its NEVER public property here. There are public garbage dumps but those in fact have an owner. ALWAYS. There is the owner and company which is assigned to it. There are specific deals that say who is responsible for which part and the garbage is never 'free'.
Throwing garbage is a crime if you do not pay and you always have place for it. More. You need to utilize everything. You pay fee for TVs bikes furniture etc. You cant just put it anywhere like that. Many ppl do it but its illegal. You can give it to charity or make a free advert in local press or net but you cant put it openly in public (only on private property).
There are also more and more closed 'public' garbage dumps making it obvious its not free stuff. They try to close all of them. There is in fact no 'public' garbage and trash. There is always an owner and there are alway independent companies who utilize and pick it. In fact it isnt a public service but private business.

I know many are doing it ignoring the law and its mostly ignored. Its just minor crime here and police mostly do not care. It slowly starts beign put in use and Im happy bout that since Im tired of garbage beign thrown around and the mess that the divers make.

How do you know a picker is just after a discarded bike and not some bill with your credit card number on it? Bank statement, discarded expired drivers license, whatever.

I don't want somebody going through my trash and whenever they have done so, they left me an awful mess to pick up. That's how I knew they did it.

At least they could ask.

How do you know the garbage man isn't picking up your credit card numbers? Or perhaps an employee at the local sorting facility?

The bigger story is why are you promoting your blog, instead of sharing your story? You never relinquished if it was your garbage or someone else's and what your state, city, or town ordinances/laws are. Most want to stop trash pickers because they loose money. Bikes are usually made of metal, scrap metal =$.

Was it subside or near the home?

Hey, with all this talk about identity theft, I have a question. If I can't even get credit in my name how in the heck is someone rifling through my garbage for info going to be able to open an account using info they find? I can't even get a Target or Sears charge card much less a major credit card, they keep telling me that they can't give me any credit because I don't have a credit history???!!!! Catch-22!

Anyway, around here if it is on the curb it is free for the taking. OP must live in a low crime area if the cops are coming out in force for trash picking! Here there is too much murder, robbery, rape, and mayhem for them to deal with to bother with silly crap like that!

Not to be an ass, but if you put any of those items into your trash without shredding them, you deserve to have your identity stolen.

Personally, I burn all paperwork that has any chance of giving away personal info once it gets to the landfill.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1055574

I guess you missed those people putting back together shredded documents from the police department used as confetti in the Thanksgiving Day parade in NYC?

Names, social security numbers and so forth.

So shredding is way over-rated.
 Quoting: Bluebird

Which is one reason I said in that same post that I burn my stuff...

I understand that shredded paper is not the endall of privacy... I also understand that it's not trivial to put shredded paper back together - especially if you use a good shredder.

Feel free to not shred your stuff since someone somewhere can put it back together if they have the time, it really won't bother me.

I'll keep doing what I can to make it harder to steal my identity, and you can keep making it easier for them to steal yours.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1055574

You know damned well I was NOT advocating putting personal information whole into the trash!

Just don't believe for one minute because it's shredded that means it's safe.

First you argue that trash is NEVER public property, then you bloviate on your countries "intelligent" manner of making people pay to throw anything and everything away, and then you ADMIT that it doesn't fucking work and your country is literally one giant dump because things get thrown wherever and yet you use this as why people SHOULD NOT pick up trash.

Re: Police Arrest Me For Taking a Bike Out Of The GARBAGE!! "North Arlington NJ"
Our garbage belongs to the city as soon as its on the curb for pickup. I've never heard of anyone getting arrested for taking it though.

One thing I never got is why that strip of land between the sidewalk and the street belongs to the city but we have to keep it mowed. The sidewalks, I can understand the right of way but wtf is up with that small strip of land?

Our old house when surveyed showed that we owned to the middle of the road. I wonder if the city found out.. if we wouldn't have to keep it paved and plowed.

Back to the garbage thing: I think they make it theirs to prevent pickers from taking thing from it.. you know, to keep them safe. I'm sure if someone did get hurt, the insurance company would get involved. IDK, seems like a whole lot of nothing and an arrest.

I didn't watch the video though.. so I'll assume there was some kind of charge for obstructing administrative functions or some other blanket for an arrestable offense. I could imagine a ticket for this but arrest?

The same assholes digging through the trash usually are the ones that pull copper off of roofs (A/C) and wiring out of street lights. The police know this. OPie broke the law that's pretty cut and dry.
 Quoting: Red Harvest

So in other words, shitty people ruin it for honest people?

Putting your garbage out is basically acknowledgement that you DO NOT NEED THIS SHIT ANYMORE, why is it that some of you get asshurt whenever someone decides to pick out some metal from it?

"ohhh but my documents!" Then stop throwing your documents in the trash and make a separate bin you burn/shred them in?

"Ohhh but hes on my land" Well I can agree that if your garbage isn't near the road then I guess thats a different story. However, if your garbage is at the top of the driveway then I think its time to deal with it.

Why get mad when someone is making better use of your trash?

I just have one question for all the assholes that are screeching in this thread about "stealing" garbage...

When cops do not have a search warrant and they decide to take someones garbage from the curb to gather evidence if they can.. is that stealing as well?

or is it OK because they are an arm of government and you sheep have been told to lie down and shut up.

So a poor person picks through your garbage and gets some things to recycle or a cop picks through your garbage looking for things to hang you... both took your garbage... which one is stealing?

pretty funny watching this thread...you cant pick trash off the curb because it is the trash companies or townships property at that point, not yours, once you put it to the curb it no longer is, as for place some towns have ordinances some dont so it is not uniformly illegal, as for assholes, saying dont touch my trash, go get laid man all that pent of frustration leads to small dick syndrome from beating it too much

So wait, you put a bike with the garbage. I don't know how it is in the USA but whenever you put something in the garbage you expect it to be gone right? You don't want that thing anymore hence why you throw it in the garbage.
So instead of it being molten down and shipped off to some factory somebody picks it up and uses it for a couple more years. Where is the crime in that? How is it stealing someone's property?
It might be the law in the USA but it seems totally illogical to me. I certainly don't throw stuff away expecting it to be still my property. If I throw something away I just want it out of my house, if it ends up in the hands of a normal person, a crack junky or a garbage collector does not matter one bit to me.

good im sick of you dirty pickers going through my trash

get the fuck off my street, out of my trash, out of my yard, and get locked up where you belong
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25293245

People in rich communities in south florida throw away anything and everything from NICE electronics to VERY NICE furniture, printers, TV TVstands NOT BECAUSE ITS BROKE, because its 1year old they need more space for something else. Beds/mattresses Refridgerators---not because its broke, BECAUSE the fan is clogged and they dont know how to unclog it. They place it near the trash in their driveways. People specifically drive around rich neighboorhoods SPECIFICALLY to go through other peoples trash with a pickup and pick other peoples trash up and resell it.
Rich people buy birds and a bird cage, bird dies a month later, they were to busy for them poor things, so they put the big bird cage only a month old near the trash.
Also bicycles thrown away---becuase it had a flat tire.
Treadmills----not because it was broke, because he butt couldnt be toned down even more, so she buys a better treadmill and places the old one near the trash.
A weird looking guy in a small truck comes around starring at yards at 7am and starts picking stuff up.

You can't dig in the garbage and sell the stuff in it because its still someones property.

No I don't think its fair but yes I know its the law.

You violated the law.

Change the law.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14899339

If it was small and resting by the curb, I took a nightstand or two or a chair when I moved into my first apartment and was just starting off. But Ive never had the guts to dumpster dive . It does seem intrusive and dangerous and unsanitary.

You can make a good living as a junk hauler. People dont know the value of scrap metal and they will beg or even pay someone to haul stuff away.
 Quoting: APOLLO ILLUMINIST

You are correct. I'm a handyman by trade, my father a master carpenter. We many times would pay junk haulers to come and take out stuff from a job site.

Back when a bunch of houses got flooded in our area, we worked to restore basements, and LOTS of scraps were hauled off by junk haulers.

We'd either let them haul it for free, or pay them a few bucks to do so. I'm sure they made off fairly well, considering the large quantities of scrap metals they would take.

In fact, most people who dumpster dive are embarrassed that they have to. As if the shame isn't enough, you have rude assholes who would actually CALL THE COPS on people too poor to afford new or even used stuff.

I've taken things out of the garbage that I thought were useful. I've also put things out for the garbage hoping someone would pick them up before the trash truck came, and they did pick them up. I was happy.

I don't understand why any normal person would care if someone took something out of the garbage that they found useful.

I think it's a good thing. Too much is thrown away, the landfills are overcrowded.
