When I took Business Law 101 in undergraduate school - about 35 years ago so you'll need to double check my accuracy - one of the topics was abandonment. This is information to be used only for talking to your lawyer and is not legal advice.
Anything that is abandoned is fair game because the owner has no expectation of getting the item back.
Trespassing is a separate issue. If there is a sign of no trespassing, you have to obey that.
Not so sure you can go in someone's back yard and remove it. But if the trash can is at the curb/sidewalk which is a public right of way, then it's yours if you want it.
Check with your lawyer.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 990186 what are you going on about??!?! we have been told fervently that there are "unspoken agreements" and that "it is the townships property".. and that "you will be trespassing" on a public right of way. you need to take that foolishness of yours up on out of here before the government comes to collect their trash!
