Assad’s chemical weapons units head out of Damascus toward Aleppo

As NATO in Brussels gave the go-ahead Tuesday night, Dec. 4, for the deployment of Patriot surface-to-air missiles to protect Turkey against Syrian missiles, military and intelligence sources reported that convoys of the Syrian army’s chemical weapons units headed out of Damascus under cover of dark and turned north up the road to Aleppo. Their destination is not yet known.

The convoys were ferrying self-propelled cannons for firing shells loaded with poisonous sarin gas.

Syrian President Bashar Assad had evidently decided to ignore the warnings President Barack Obama issued Monday night that there would be consequences if he or anyone in Syria resorted to chemical warfare and each would be held accountable.

Sources report that the Syrian ruler is aparently gambling dangerously on the Americans holding back from attacking the convoys as long as they deploy unconventional weapons, and would only react when they are used.

He is also taking advantage of the heavy winds, rain and cloud over this part of the eastern Mediterranean and counting on the weather to obstruct military operations against his chemical weapons units.

By the time the weather clears some time Thursday, the units will be in place in battle formation. Meanwhile, bombing the convoys in windy weather could cause the deadly gas to spread out of control in unpredictable directions.

Foreign ministers from member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization approved Turkey’s request to deploy a missile-defense system along the border with Syria.

Turkey asked NATO for the Patriot system, designed to intercept aircraft or missiles, after weeks of talks about how to shore up security on its 900-kilometer (560-mile) border with Syria as the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad deepens.

The 21-month conflict has killed more than 41,000 people, according to the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

yes that's one thing that got me thinking would they use the fact of weapons being in place and prep for an attack or would they allow them to be used first

I was reading something from the gulf war that stated that chemical weapons degrade very quickly once they are in 'front line' positions.

Report: Rebels seize military airfield in Damascus

Syrian rebels have taken over a military airfield in the outskirts of Damascus, Al-Arabiya reported. The takeover was described as "an important military achievement."

It was also reported that the Free Syrian Army seized the Syrian army's 22nd Brigade air defense base east of Damascus.

Turkey knows everything about Syrian's 700 missiles, foreign minister says

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu claims that the Syrian regime has 700 missiles, adding that their location, storage method and holders are no secret to Ankara.

“A psychological edge has been exceeded in Syria. In the past, it was feared that “if the regime survives, it will take revenge.” But now everyone thinks of what to do next if the regime falls,” Davutoğlu said in a recent interview with Turkish daily Sabah, adding that Turkey’s demand for the Patriot missile system was for precautionary reasons against any threat from uncontrolled groups. “The protection from NATO will be three dimensional; one is the short-range Patriots, the second is the middle-range Terminal High Altitude Air Defense [THAD] system and the last is the AEGIS system, which counters missiles that can reach outside the atmosphere.” With this integrated system, Turkey will have maximum protection, he said.

Davutoğlu said Ankara wants “establishment of a transitional government without [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad,” while Russia wants “a transitional government with al-Assad continuing in its normal process.” Russia and Turkey agree on the target but have differences over the means to reach it, according to Davutoğlu, who added that Russia’s efficient involvement in the process is more significant in comparison to Iran’s role in the issue.
