US & Allied Forces on Standby. US Carrier Off Syrian Coast Assad’s chemical weapons units head out of Damascus toward Aleppo Quoting: DoorBert As NATO in Brussels gave the go-ahead Tuesday night, Dec. 4, for the deployment of Patriot surface-to-air missiles to protect Turkey against Syrian missiles, military and intelligence sources reported that convoys of the Syrian army’s chemical weapons units headed out of Damascus under cover of dark and turned north up the road to Aleppo. Their destination is not yet known. The convoys were ferrying self-propelled cannons for firing shells loaded with poisonous sarin gas. Syrian President Bashar Assad had evidently decided to ignore the warnings President Barack Obama issued Monday night that there would be consequences if he or anyone in Syria resorted to chemical warfare and each would be held accountable. Sources report that the Syrian ruler is aparently gambling dangerously on the Americans holding back from attacking the convoys as long as they deploy unconventional weapons, and would only react when they are used. He is also taking advantage of the heavy winds, rain and cloud over this part of the eastern Mediterranean and counting on the weather to obstruct military operations against his chemical weapons units. By the time the weather clears some time Thursday, the units will be in place in battle formation. Meanwhile, bombing the convoys in windy weather could cause the deadly gas to spread out of control in unpredictable directions. [link to www.debka.com] Assad is gonna die anyway. He probably thought "fuck everybody. I'm taking as many people as I can with me!" |

US & Allied Forces on Standby. US Carrier Off Syrian Coast After nearly two years of fighting, Syria’s vaunted war machine is showing serious cracks as emboldened rebels snap up more bases and airfields and force army units to retrench behind defensive lines in major cities, Western officials and military analysts say. Bolstered by a steady flow of arms from foreign backers, opposition forces have scored a series of tactical victories in the Damascus suburbs in recent days and are advancing steadily toward the city’s airport, adding to what some analysts view as a sense of momentum that has been building since late summer. Powerful antitank and antiaircraft weapons have helped level what was once a lopsided contest, the officials say, so much so that army commanders have been unable or unwilling to challenge rebel assaults on large military bases on the capital’s outskirts. “The regime isn’t intervening to defend its positions,” said Jeffrey White, a former Middle East military analyst with the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency. “And when it does try to counterattack, it often fails.” [link to www.washingtonpost.com] Last Edited by Newshunter on 12/05/2012 08:14 AM |

Based upon conditions of recently deposed dictators, he has no reason to believe he will survive; therefore, he intends to inflict as much damage as possible on the way down. Do not forget, Assad has much of Saddam's old toybox still in his possession. Quite a morning! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28334654 not knowing all the facts maybe something to do with it, but who knows he may actually be the crazed barbarian we are all lead to believe however he was educated in UK and has quite a substantial amount of support still and Syria did say they will unleash everything if foreign intervention was apparent, he has been quite restrained in some cases not all I don't condone all of what has been done but the opposition has committed crimes as well |

US & Allied Forces on Standby. US Carrier Off Syrian Coast The Christian news portal Compass Direct News is reporting of the torture and subsequent murder of a Syrian Orthodox parish priest caught up in the violence of the Syrian Civil War. As reported, Father Fadi Haddad recently left his parish in the town of Qatana to negotiate the release of one of his parishioners, who had recently been kidnapped. Only a week later was the holy man's dead and mutilated corpse found along a roadside. Fr. Haddad had his eyes gouged out, presumably done while he was still alive. [link to www.aina.org] |

US & Allied Forces on Standby. US Carrier Off Syrian Coast 1321 GMT: Syria. Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has made some surprisingly revealing statements. According to Lavrov, Russia's official position is in accordance with NATO's that there is no military option for solving the Syrian crisis: "Our partners touched upon the Syrian situation and assured us they were seeking an exclusively peaceful solution,” he disclosed. “They said a military solution to the conflict was non-existent – and we fully agreed with them." Lavrov emphasized the Russian position that “there will be political and diplomatic support in an effort to urge the combatants to stop the bloodshed and sit down at the negotiating table.” "Syria is not Libya,” Lavrov added, making reference to NATO’s decision to intervene in last year’s Libyan civil war, which led to the capture and assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Yet, on chemical weapons, Lavrov suggested that Assad would not use them, and this would be a "red line" for Russia as well: “For us, any violations of international agreements in this area are unacceptable," Lavrov stressed. Reuters reports that the operation, involving "troops and attack helicopters", took place "at the western end of Turkey's frontier with Syria, far from the main arena of conflict between" the Turkish army and the PKK. Also, looks like resupply efforts to the Syrian military are becoming more and more difficult for Assad. 1340 GMT: Iraq/Syria. Iraq has barred four scheduled Syrian flights from entering the country to collect attack helicopters which had been repaired by Russia. The Syrian goverment has been trying to recover the helicopters since June. Iraq has recently come under pressure from the US and other countries to stop any arms from reaching Syria. The Iraqi Prime Minister's media advisor told ProPublica yesterday: We will not authorize any overflight until we make sure that it does not contain any military equipment in line with the Iraqi government's policy which firmly rejects allowing transporting any military shipments via our airspace from or to Syria.
