I'd say the client is wrong. I've done steel framing and wood. Always prefer wood for hanging drywall, however, steel is obviously more fireproof. That doesn't make any sense....at all. I've also hung 10 foot drywall. Not much fun. But a job is a job. On walls that high, the frame has to be firmly attached to the ceiling. |

Is it a one hour rated wall or more than that? Depending on the fire separation/rating required, will determine the type of framing and layers of gwb(gypsum wallboard)needed, be it a shaftliner fire separation system c/w ct studs, 1" core board + 2 x5/8" type X gwb, or just a single layer 5/8" gwb b/s steel stud framing c/w Roxul. in short ...YOU NEED FRAMING TO HANG THE DRYWALL ON !!! |

I had guys installing huge fireproof drywall and they just walked off the job because the client supposedly doesn't know what they're doing... They wanted my guys to hang huge walls without any steel studs behind them. My guys said the walls will fall down and kill someone and won't pass inspection so they don't want their name behind it. It's why "base board" moulding exists...you don';t really need that in a commercial job because the looks don't really matter, but you still use a space between drywall and floor...always.
