Any Drywalling Pros? I have a question
I'm working with a company who is remodeling their manufacturing facility. I had guys installing huge fireproof drywall and they just walked off the job because the client supposedly doesn't know what they're doing... They wanted my guys to hang huge walls without any steel studs behind them. My guys said the walls will fall down and kill someone and won't pass inspection so they don't want their name behind it.

Would you say my client is in the wrong or are my guys just crazy?

What's supposed to hold the drywall up?

Happy thoughts?

Building codes exist for a reason. To keep buildings from killing people.

Re: Any Drywalling Pros? I have a question
That doesn't make any sense. What are you supposed to attach the dry wall to? I'd say the client is wrong. I've done steel framing and wood. Always prefer wood for hanging drywall, however, steel is obviously more fireproof.
That doesn't make any sense....at all. I've also hung 10 foot drywall. Not much fun. But a job is a job. On walls that high, the frame has to be firmly attached to the ceiling.

Well you can't "Hang" Drywall with nothing to hang it on. So you have some sort of miscommunication happening.

Re: Any Drywalling Pros? I have a question
You have to have framing to hang the drywall on, or nothing will hold it in place. Is it a one hour rated wall or more than that?

Depending on the fire separation/rating required, will determine the type of framing and layers of gwb(gypsum wallboard)needed, be it a shaftliner fire separation system c/w ct studs, 1" core board + 2 x5/8" type X gwb, or just a single layer 5/8" gwb b/s steel stud framing c/w Roxul.

in short ...YOU NEED FRAMING TO HANG THE DRYWALL ON !!!

Most clients don't know anything about the project, that's why they hire "professionals ".

Geez...hang drywall on no support beams...haha...

Got to confess, when I was doing up an old house with a crappy wall, I did stick drywall straight onto it with No Nails. Worked okay - well I sold the house anyway.

This client basically hires on 100 illegals to sort out vegetables during the spring... They wanted skilled drywalling guys which I found them. My drywallers are working under their maintenance guys who have no clue what they're doing... No plans, no drawings, no studs. The client is a tard.

Re: Any Drywalling Pros? I have a question
im not an expert, but i have done quite a bit. in my experience not that much strain is present on verticle drywall as it it resting on the ground and the screws are just basically keeping it from falling over and pulling away from the studs. a single 2" screw will tack up a 4'X8' sheet so i dont really see why you would NEED steel studs, regular 2X4s should be fine.

hmmmm how much did the 4x8 sheets weigh? I basically going through a middle man having the info relayed to me. All I know is the sheetrock weighed anywhere from 100-150 pounds.

well i don't think it should matter how much they weigh because they should be resting on the floor, but maybe for commercial applications they gap it a 1/2 inch but still i think as long as the wall containing the studs is sound i dont see the problem

Bout 50 lbs for a 1/2 sheet, bout 70 for 5/8...5/8 is usually known as "fire code"

You have to pass state inspections or the delay and money lost will be high and youll have to do it over the right way.

Just do it right first time.

Drywall should Never be "on the floor"...there should always be a space because if you don't have a gap?...moisture is going to whick up the drywall and destroy it.

It's why "base board" moulding exists...you don';t really need that in a commercial job because the looks don't really matter, but you still use a space between drywall and floor...always.
