Received strange letter from the United States Postal Service..anyone else?
In my mail today was a letter from the U.S.P.S. asking me to participate as a confidential reporter. I.B.M. is conducting the "mail measurement study" for them.

It talks about service performance with the goal to improve processing and mail delivery.

However.....if I agree to report for them I am supposed to "report the delivery of specific types of mail I receive".

I wonder if they are trying to improve service why they would want to know what type of mail I receive and when? Or, am I just being paranoid? LOL

As a thank you for participating I would have an opportunity to enroll in some sort of rewards program. There is a web address, Prospect I.D. and password for me to use if I decide to participate.

Also states that my participation will not be known by postal employees, only I.B.M. receives data from participants. So, are they trying to find the slacker mail carriers or what? And what does that have to with my magazine subscriptions and whatever else I may receive?

On the bottom:
"confidential material, nor for reproduction or general disclosure".

Wanted to add..it looks pretty legit. Website and phone numbers to call with any questions.

could be a con of some sort, go to the post office and ask them about it, that would be the common sense thing to do at this point, it's called "being direct"

That's what I thought initially but the website provided is the usps website. I just thought it was odd.....and I thought they were having such financial woes? It would seem they would have to shell out cash to send these letters to random people just to see if the postal worker is taking too long to deliver or whatever.

My first thought was:

surveillance on people in your neighborhood

then second thought was:

you're on a list

then finally:

Its to get people reeled in with something seemingly innocent, and then when they need more information on other people in your neighborhood (see thought number one above) they will ask a little more and a little more... and slowly people will drop off the pay roll so to speak -- the ones who remain are the real rats & moles.

The only way I could see this as being for legit budgeting etc purposes would be if they were trying to figure out, demographics-wise, what types of mail get sent out so that they could raise rates on different types of postage per region.

It wouldn't be impossible to retrieve this type of information from their databases -- but since its government it is probably all on mainframes still and I am *sure* its not pulled together in any sort of ODS or DWH anywhere... it could be done but would be a pita.

But yeah, surveillance. Rats & Moles.

It'S JUST A VERSION OF MYSTERY SHOPPER, FFS.
They send you mail (leaflet or whatever), you contact them at delivery at your door, your reward..a gift token, usually coupons to spend at participating sales.
They gain an insight to their modus operandi.

Or did you think it was gonna be a bomb?

I also received this same letter. If they had offered any kind of monetary compensation I would have considered doing it.

But just to be entered into some kind of "reward" possibility didn't entice me.

I threw the letter in the trash.

If you want to support the post office, take any envelope that has a postage paid on it (like the return envelopes in credit card offers) and put any piece of paper in it and mail it back. The USPS gets money, and spammers get what they deserve.

How do I get on it? I want them to do somthing about my corrupt post office. I get critical mail a year late or not all, at times. They refuse to deliver packages. They return my mail and packages if my po box gets full from the junk mail they get paid to put in my box. Over the last 20 years I can not begin to tell how much it has cost me.

Re: Received strange letter from the United States Postal Service..anyone else?
I got that letter a few weeks after contacting the USPS about a package that wasn't delivered, it was sent back as "not a valid address" or something. It was a delivery person error and they 'found' the package after I filed a formal complaint.

I assumed they wanted me to be a mail nark and the part about revealing the specific type of mail I was receiving and going to the website to report it every day sucks too.

I still have it, it is legit.

Re: Received strange letter from the United States Postal Service..anyone else?
I have been participating in this study for a couple of years now. The USPS does not track your personal mail. They hire people to send out mail that resembles regular 1st class mail, sometimes hand-addressed, sometimes not - looks like a bill, a greeting card, a postcard, a business letter. The mail is not "real" in that it consists merely of an envelope with a code # inside. Sometimes there are blank pages to mimic a brochure or other enclosure. Each piece has a tracking # and presumably the sender(s) report when they mailed stuff to their assigned addressees. Participants like me, known as reporters, simply call an 800 # or go to a website and report the code # of the mail piece and the date received. This study purportedly tracks delivery times between various post offices. I have received mail from all over the US and some foreign countries. I receive free postage stamps periodically for this work. Perfectly legit, has nothing to do with "spying" on people or mail carriers; in fact they strongly caution participants not to let their mail carriers know of their involvement so the carriers won't treat test mail differently if they come to recognize it. Wow, the paranoia out there!

Look at it this way. You received it in the mail. I guarantee you every carrier knows exactly what that is. If you are happy with your mail person, I would try to be there one day and tell them and see what they say about it and let them know you have no intentions of doing it. If they start catching hell at the shop and they know you received that letter, they will know who is causing their problems for them. Just a thought.

If the post office stopped delivering junk mail, they would go broke.

I saw a study that reported 60% if the mail they deliver is junk or solicitation mail.
