I walk to work and I walk home after work. So, I'm pretty familiar with the smells common to the area. Aaaanyway, today on the walk to work, I smelled something out of the ordinary - not sure whether I'd characterise it as more of a methane smell or sulpher. Wouldn't have thought much of it, but smelled the same smell again in a completely different area on the way home. It was just weird - enough so that I took notice. Couldn't help but think of the widespread reports of strange smells before the New Madrid quake in the 1800's... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 10044371 Australia 12/06/2012 12:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | i seriously wouldn't linger much longer in California if i were you - if it's at all possible to move interstate for you i would be moving...trust your intuition imo... this prophetic dream about an Earthquake in Cali which puts california into the sea involved the smell of sulfur becoming very strong... [youtube] [link to www.youtube.com] By Joe Brandt...he lived a fair while ago, and yet he knew about tiny cars, miniskirts and hollywood stars on the street.... sulfur smells are definitely associated with quakes... |

I have been smelling sulphur outside the past day or two, in multiple locations. Anyone else? Quoting: Needles Eye Holy smoke! I just walked out of my den door onto the terrace and ... I SMELLED SULPHUR. Holy f'ing shit, I'm on the Peninsula, north of San Jose! Very far from Contra Costa. Damnedest thing. How does sulphur get into the air that far apart? Rather than EQ I'd suspect something going on west of us, in San Fran or the ocean... HFS!! I, too smelt a strong sulphuric smell upon leaving my office and arriving home this afternoon...both on the SF Bay Peninsula! Struck me as odd and was expecting to smell it when out walking my dog later, but didn't... Poked my nose out the back door right now after coming upon this string, and thankfully nothing... I trust there's no doom on the way but... |

There was a 4.4 off the coast 8 hours ago, now that we know that?....can we figure out if the wind was coming from that 4.4 just to the north of you guys? Satelitte maps with wind direction, maybe we had a gas release offshore? It smells horrible outside like a swamp or something. its raining a little bit right now but the smell is rank nothing like the way rain should smell. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29043994 Note the time of smell, and wind direction then use the 4.4 quake offshore and see if we had a Massive Methane leak.... It's late for me, I'll check back tomorrow, good luck guys.....I'm just to the north of you. That 4.4 was a couple hundred miles from the Bay Area: [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] uSGS didn't even include it as a California quake: [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] Not that what they do means anything. |

Now can you do that for the Peninsula? :) Actually I've spent a lot of time poring over old maps like yours, and have found several springs in what is now Monte Bello preserve (Mindego Hill usgs quadrant). None of them mention sulphur though. But the San Andreas also runs directly through there. |
