Don't know as much about it as I should, but many countries of SA have been fighting against imperialist forces/foreign exploitation for some time now. One of my favorite quotes from Correa (president of Ecuador) runs along the lines of "We will allow US bases in Ecuador, when the US allows Ecuador to have bases in Miami" (from his interview on Assange's 'The World Tomorrow'. Not saying whether I support any of these political strategies, but I think it's interesting to try and follow allegiances.
