If this is anything worth looking into, I'm going to check it out at night and try to find Leo. It's nice to view the stars whenever possible anyway. "Fiery the Angels rose, & as they rose deep thunder roll'd Around their shores: indignant burning with the fires of Orc" - William Blake, America a Prophecy (...also misquoted in Blade Runner by Roy Batty) "Tempus est optimus iudex" - "Time is the best judge" "The very word "'secrecy'" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings." - John F. It's becoming clear to me though that I am going to need to show CW Leo in the near future. I really don't feel like dragging my ass out of bed in the pre-dawn hours to do it tomorrow though. Ideal time to image CW Leonis is therefore right before astronomical twilight at 0'dark fucking 30. ![]() Éireann~ Eisteacht le gra! ~ArunaLuna (Translation from Gaelic: "Listen to Love!") Leonis shows up nicely but not as bright as the object to the right of it. Quoting: Nexus-9 Leonis shows up nicely but not as bright as the object to the right of it. Leonis IS the object on the right. You had the coordinates for CW Leo wrong, it's the one on the right. The star on the left at coordinates 09 51 01.98466, +13 03 58.4598 is 23 Leo. It's just a regular star. In visible light it's about magnitude 6.4, but in infrared it's a bit brighter at magnitude 2.4~3.6 depending on the band. ![]() |

And just to add, THIS is one more reason why you should learn how to process astrophotos so that you don't have to rely on webware like Microsoft WWT: [link to www.godlikeproductions.com] I used PixInsight to process the raw 2MASS data. Of course, that program's not free now, but there are other programs out there and to me it's worth a little cash to be able to handle the data myself. Oh and before anyone says anything, the blue dot at the center of CW Leonis is there because the central pixels were so over-exposed in the "red" exposure (K band) that they shut off much like how some people end up recording a "black dot" on the sun with their cell phone cameras. The other junk around CW Leonis is lens flaring. The same effects happen with all bright stars in the 2MASS survey. Last Edited by Dr. Astro on 12/06/2012 12:31 AM ![]() |
