Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29172864 ... It sounds like Nebraska has sucked up more than its share of water from neighboring states and must make up the difference. |

Officials want to get the pipeline in operation by June 2013. They will meet Monday in McCook to consider an engineer for the project. The project, which officially began just six weeks ago, will convert the largest crop farm in Nebraska to a farm from which only water will be harvested. Conservation officials officially bought the $83 million in farmland Tuesday. The water will be pumped, piped and ditched into two major Nebraska rivers. The deal will help Nebraska meet agreements with surrounding states and the federal government for river flows in the Platte and Republican rivers, Kent Miller of the Twin Platte Natural Resources District said. The farm, formerly known as Lincoln Farm and before that as Oppliger Farms, was one of the largest crop farms in Nebraska. Located in southern Lincoln County, it consists of 117 center-pivot irrigated crop fields, most of which cover half of a square mile. (Less than 50%) They must have a death wish. |

Quoting: Wut? 21978477 Bets on how long the aquifer lasts before drying up.....and sinkholes start popping up everywhere? 100% corrupt EPA. ![]() Not the EPA. This has everything to do with the ongoing dispute between Kansas and Nebraska over water flow. Nebraska has to make up the difference of whats used for irrigation and this seems to be the solution. Not everything is done on the federal level. |

Quoting: TDJ They have taken more that their share of river and ground water from states around them trying to grow corn in the sand hills We don't do much farming (crops) in the west, its ranching (cattle). The east is where we farm. I am pissed about this though, stupid asses did want the pipeline to run through the sandhills because of the aquifer, fine. But now they're gonna just pump the water out? |
