Goats are herd animals. So unless you are able to be with the goat 24/7, you need at least two goats. They will either scream day and night or stop eating entirely if they are left alone. Goats are also not house broken. So they are generally outside animals. Not something to keep in an apartment. If you have a large yard, and understanding neighbors, you might be able to do it. (Goats are probably illegal if your in an urban setting. So your neighbors have to agree with you getting goats or the police will come and take them away. - The goats, not your neigbhors.) You can buy all their feed (hay, alfalfa pellets, grain, etc) at a pet store. But you will need a place to dispose or compost their droppings. (Community garden?) Goats are picky eaters, despite what people claim. But they do have favorite foods. If it's pretty and you want it in your garden, they will destroy it. Rose bushes are their favorite all time food. Next would be whatever vegetable your neighbor is growing, and next is wild blackberries. Even though they are happy to destroy your garden, they may not want to touch the hay and grain that you buy them. They may also get bored with their food, and want you to buy them something different. They will be eating your neighbors garden, because goats are natural born Houdinis. If they can get under, over, or through your fence, then they will. Especially if your neighbor has a tasty rose bush or apple tree. I've seen heavily pregnant does (female goats) break into holes that are just big enough for a chicken to walk through. They must be part snake, being able to unhinge all their bones to get through holes. (No science behind this, just what I have seen.) Lastly, if you still crazy enough to get goats, pick a pair of small ones. Nigerian dwarfs of pigmies would work, since they are the smallest. Make sure to only get females or castrated males, since intact males smell like a high school locker room when they are mature. I only have about 35 of these monsters, and can't imagine life without them. But they are not for everyone. |

(Well, at least I thought it was funny) But I have to be serious now. Yeah Dude. Get a Goat (Or two. Unless you want them screaming and starving to death out of protest). It'll be cool. Anonymous Coward User ID: 5676214 United States 12/06/2012 12:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | we've got a female pygmy goat that lives on the front porch. She doesn't seem to have Any control over her spencter and the shit just rolls out whenever it pleases. And she squats to pee whenever/wherever she feels like it. She rams whatever cats or dogs come around. She likes to play and dance and I've never fed her. She just eats the leaves around the place and even though I put water out, I've never seen her drink it. She seems to get all the water she needs with the leaves. I'm hoping that she will eat all the leaves that have fallen from the trees. I'm worried about her being too cold this winter and she won't go into a plastic cage that is there. So I'm putting a sweatshirt on her and have a dogs' sweater for when it gets colder. She sleeps on a lawn chair on the porch. I'm sure all the neighbors think it's a hoot to see her wandering around with no fence. All in all, I'd rather have a dog, but my son outvotes me. |

Quoting: ^Isaac^ If you have some kind of back yard then get them, and if you get a goat get 2, they get lonely. They also don't mark their territory, so this means they just shit when they feel like it. They are better kept outdoors. Also check your local laws about having farm animals in your town, before getting them. Good luck. Tolerance is submission, Success is the struggle, There is America and then there is the world.
